Gourmet San - Tower Hamlets
Gourmet San
Description
Tucked away in Bethnal Green, Gourmet San offers an intriguing mix of authentic Northern Chinese dishes at remarkably affordable prices. Diners rave about the bold flavors, particularly the sautéed crab in spicy sauce, and lamb skewers that capture the essence of street food from Beijing. While some dishes may not always hit the mark, the overall experience is charmingly authentic and surprisingly cheap, with meals often costing around £20 per person. Despite a few service hiccups, the delightful flavors and generous portions make Gourmet San a must-visit for any food lover seeking genuine Chinese fare.

The restaurant took nearly 2 hours to deliver my food. When I called to inquire, they simply told me to wait without offering any explanation or apology. The delivery driver contacted me before arriving, claiming to be at my main gate. However, when I went down, he was not there. After waiting an additional 10 minutes, he finally showed up. Not only did he refuse to deliver to my flat, but the whole experience was disorganized and frustrating. I will not be ordering from this restaurant again.

Doesn't look like much from the outside and the decor but don't let this fool you. This place does authentic Szechuan cuisine- and this is evidenced from the dozens of Chinese sharing plates together. Go with at least 4 people and share a couple of dishes and starters (portions are massive).
You can tell how authentic a restaurant is by looking round at the customers and taking this into account I would say this is one of the best Chinese I've had in London. The sauces tastes very distinct rather than being common msg flavouring. The food is good value, though a little challenging to decipher off the menu. The duck fried rice and chicken in garlic sauce were particularly tasty.
