Alobar Yorkville
4.3 / 5 (2515 reviews)

Description

Michelin‑starred Alobar in Yorkville delivers elevated, approachable plates—foie gras parfait, braised short rib, duck pappardelle and mille‑feuille are frequent highlights—set in a relaxed, jacket‑optional dining room with a shaded patio. Prices and wine markups run high, and service is inconsistent, praised as warm and professional by some but criticized as inattentive by others. Ideal for special occasions, dates or pastry lovers who want a lively, accessible fine‑dining experience with a few caveats around value and staff polish.

We had an incredible dinner at Alobar in Yorkville! Everything was flawless from start to finish. We began with the lobster appetizer and zucchini salad — both fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated. For mains, we had the tenderloin and striploin steaks, and they were absolutely perfect — cooked exactly to our liking and full of rich, savory flavor. We finished the meal with their banana cake, and it was the perfect ending — moist, not overly sweet, and truly memorable. The service was warm and professional, and the ambiance was elegant yet relaxed. One of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Toronto. Highly recommend! For our anniversary this year, my husband and I chose Alobar Yorkville, a restaurant that proudly held a Michelin Star in both 2022 and 2023. Our evening there was certainly pleasant, with both the food and service being commendable. The dishes we enjoyed were well-executed and thoughtfully presented, showcasing quality ingredients and culinary skill. Each plate was clearly crafted with precision. Similarly, the service was attentive and professional throughout our meal, ensuring our needs were met without being intrusive. However, despite these positive aspects, there was a subtle, intangible element that felt missing from the experience. While everything was undeniably good, it didn 't quite reach the heights of certain other fine dining establishments we 've cherished, such as George Restaurant or Don Alfonso 1890. This feeling was subtly reinforced by the absence of any acknowledgment of our anniversary, a gesture that has become customary for us at other high-end venues. While not an issue in itself, it contributed to the overall sense that the experience lacked that distinct wow factor or deeply memorable quality that truly sets an exceptional fine dining experience apart. Alobar Yorkville offers a solid dining experience, and it 's clear why it earned its Michelin Star recognition. Yet, for us, it just didn 't quite capture the same magic or leave the lasting impression that we 've come to expect from our most beloved culinary adventures in Toronto. The pappardelle was the highlight of the three courses. The duck fat and sauce clung beautifully to the pasta, which absorbed the flavors wonderfully. The duck was perfectly roasted with crispy skin and tender meat, and the fat melted in my mouth. I also loved the fried garlic crisps on top, which added an extra layer to this flavorful dish. As for the Mille-feuille, it was suitable for sharing between two. The cream was light, and the puff pastry was crisp and delicate. The balance between the tartness of the raspberry and the sweetness of the custard was delightful. However, I was disappointed with the service at this Michelin-starred restaurant. This isn’t my first experience at such a venue, and I expect a certain standard, such as staff familiar with the menu and attentive service, like changing plates between courses. After being seated, the waitress didn’t offer to explain the menu, leaving me to figure it out on my own. While I usually appreciate efficient service, swiftly clearing finished dishes and correcting mistakes, the overall experience felt rushed. Right after I finished my dessert, they placed the bill on the table without any discussion. I would recommend the food, but I believe there is significant room for improvement in their service.

The Pappardelle was absolutely bursting with flavor, featuring generous portions of perfectly cooked Duck with delightful hints of spice. The Foie Gras Parfait was a heavenly mix of melt-in-your-mouth goodness (including cherry jam) that paired wonderfully with the aromatic toasted bread served alongside it. We shared our enthusiasm for these two dishes with the staff, and we were fortunate to have Olga and Cade assist us with additional recommendations that perfectly matched our tastes, even advising us on the order in which to enjoy them. We embraced all their suggestions and couldn’t have been happier with our choices. A highlight of the meal was definitely the Salmon Crudo, which had a perfect blend of flavors with subtle hints of poblano pepper, just as both Olga and Cade suggested. Other delightful recommendations included the garlic prawn skillet and the beef carpaccio, served with a side of pain au lait to soak up the delicious remnants from the garlic prawns and duck pappardelle—such a treat! The restaurant itself has an intimate ambiance, just right for my partner and me, especially since we prefer dining at bar or counter seating wherever we go. We’re already looking forward to returning for the Salmon Crudo and Duck Pappardelle, and to explore more of the menu that we haven’t yet tried. Thank you to the entire staff for your amazing service and for making our anniversary so special, including the surprise drink Cade created for our walk home.
