I absolutely adore this restaurant, it's even better than Wetherspoons. They allow dogs, have cheap beer, and offer delicious food. I love how I can exchange books here and they even donated some books for me to swap. Such kindness. View all feedback.
What gav1901 doesn't like about Isaac Merritt:
Waited for our order for three. The orders came out. The two were acceptable at best. My dish of fish and chips (being by the sea thought why not). It came out way way overdone. Fish didn’t flake at all it crumbled. And was Newmarket all batter with the smallest piece of fish when I could find it. It was the worst fish and chips I ever have. Stay away at all costs when it comes to food. View all feedback.
I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews for this bar. I frequent this place often and always enjoy a peaceful pint. I have never had any issues with the staff, who are always polite and friendly. While I appreciate that they allow dogs inside, I do think that they should not be allowed on the seats meant for customers. The bar offers a good selection of real ales, but the pool table could be placed in a more suitable location. Additionally, they host music, karaoke nights, and a game called "find the joker," and I look forward to a potential quiz night in the future.
I'm disappointed to say that the previous experience at this restaurant was much better when it was called Spoons. Like many others have mentioned, the only good thing about this place is the cheap beer. However, it desperately needs a thorough cleaning and some repairs. On a Thursday night, the bar unexpectedly closed at 10pm with no warning on their Facebook page or in the bar itself. This could be a great venue, but the unannounced early closure is unacceptable.
The beer was decent, but the rest of the restaurant could use some updating. Additionally, I find it inappropriate when people with dogs allow their pets on the seats, especially when they are dirty and wet. I have no issue with dogs being in the pub, but it would have been better if the staff had asked them to move. Sadly, I would only give them a score of 3 if they addressed the dog issue. It's concerning that the seats may remain dirty for the next guests.

This was our first visit since it stopped being a chain restaurant. The selection of local ales and apple wines was excellent and reasonably priced. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. We only came for drinks, but the atmosphere felt more sophisticated and catered to adults, which was a definite improvement over the previous chain restaurant.
