While patrons reminisce about the days of excellent food and quick service, recent experiences reveal a mix of satisfaction and disappointment. Many diners have noted a decline in food quality, particularly with lukewarm pies and inconsistent batter on the fish, while others laud the friendly staff and some decent meals. Despite the challenges, loyal customers remain hopeful. With its convenient location and potential for improvement, Chas N Daves continues to draw attention in the local dining scene.
I used to frequent this restaurant when it was under previous ownership and called The Blue Anchor. I had no complaints - the food was excellent, prices were good, service was quick, and the family who ran it were very pleasant. When new owners took over and rebranded it as Chas N Daves, the food was initially good, but the service was a bit slow. I gave them the benefit of the doubt as they had just taken over. However, in my visits over the past 6 to 9 months, although the service has improved in terms of speed, the food quality has declined. The pies, in particular, are consistently lukewarm or nearly cold - I am not exaggerating. I only live a 3-minute walk away, so transportation time is not the issue. This has happened multiple times, and while a quick microwave fix solves the problem, I don't believe I should have to do that. The chips also sometimes taste stale, as if they have been sitting for a while. The fish, however, is always fine. In conclusion, the restaurant is not as good as it was under the previous owners, but it is convenient and I will continue to go back. I just hope they address the pie temperature issue.
We have had the most dreadful fish and chip meal ever. The fish was tiny; one was cooked the other was covered in semi cooked batter; the chips were old not cooked this evening and were full of damage and bruises and were barely warm.Third time we made the mistake of buying there. Never again. So dissapointed as had expected great things when it changed hands !!!
Our neighborhood fish and chip shop, formerly known as the Blue Anchor, used to be excellent. However, last night when we tried their fish and chips for the first time in a while, it was the worst I have ever had. The batter was a pale color and not the usual golden brown, and it became soft and soggy while we were eating. Based on this disappointing experience, I will not be returning to this restaurant.
Arrived in Torquay knowing where I was getting my fish and chip supper as it was a Friday but having had a late lunch and a longer than usual siesta Hanburys in Babbacombe was closed by 9pm along with every other chippy in the town. Not one for giving up I asked Google and I discovered for the first time Chase and Dave’s, so I rang, ordered and collected it by 9.45pm. Chase was having a night off but Dave was a sheer delight. As was his cod and chips cooked in rapeseed oil. Fresh fast and delicious. Having lived not far from the first Harry Ramsdens in Guisley back in the early 1970s you know what great fish and chips should look and taste like. Hanburys look out. You have new kids on the block and they seem to be taking their time to get that important brand right but something tells me it won’t be long before they start entering the same competitions. Thank you Dave for taking the time to look after me. I’ll be back next time I’m here. HNY Mr T from Kent
