I recently dined at a vegan restaurant in Japan that prides itself on not using MSG or other chemical seasonings. However, I found the food to be quite bland. I ordered a Set Meal with half soy meat nuggets and half dumplings. The meal included a main dish, salad, miso soup, pickled veggies, mashed potatoes with cucumber and chickpeas, and brown rice. The soy nuggets had decent flavor but lacked crispiness. The dumplings were plain and lacked flavor. The salad was fresh and enjoyable, but the miso soup tasted more like an Italian minestrone with lots of vegetables. I would have preferred more pickled veggies as they were tasty but limited. The brown rice was bland, and the mashed potatoes were the most interesting part of the meal. Overall, the experience was mediocre, with some parts of the meal being acceptable but lacking overall. I believe vegan restaurants should strive for higher standards and not rely solely on the vegan label for a good review. I have had better food for less money and do not plan to return to this restaurant.
My friend and I ordered the gyoza and Kara age teishoku. The teishoku came with a side dish and miso soup. Both the Kara age and gyoza were delicious! The meal was balanced and tasty. I highly recommend it!
