Cactus Fire - Timaru
Cactus Fire
Description
An inventive, casual eatery serving generous, well-presented plates and popular desserts, often praised for friendly staff and lively atmosphere. Diners highlight standout tacos, poutine and inventive small plates, but experiences vary: some find dishes pricey or unevenly prepared, with occasional limp fried items, supermarket-style sauces and slow service. Small venue can feel busy; portions are generally satisfying. Worth visiting for curious diners and groups seeking hearty, eclectic fare, but temper expectations on authenticity and value.

Here’s what we indulged in: Jamaican Pork Pineapple taco, Mango Prawns taco, pulled pork empanadas, jalapeño poppers, honey-glazed cauliflower, cheeseburger rolls, and poutine topped with pulled pork. We absolutely loved the tacos and the cauliflower. Our standout favorites were the Cheeseburger Rolls (a hit with our 10-year-old), the Poutine (hubby’s favorite), and the Jalapeño poppers and cauliflower (my favorites)! Don’t miss out on trying the complimentary hot sauces! For drinks, I ordered an iced oat milk latte, which wasn’t on the menu. As someone very particular about coffee quality, I can say this one was delicious—smooth and creamy! My husband got the Bourbon Peach Tea and couldn't stop raving about how excellent it was. **Top tip:** This place is incredibly popular! Be sure to book a reservation and consider dining early. It was packed just half an hour after we arrived. We even packed up some food to take home and were eager to order dessert to try. However, we ended up waiting nearly 20 minutes for someone to take our dessert order, which was understandable given how busy they were. This isn’t a criticism—it's clear the staff were doing their best! We also loved the fun artwork throughout the restaurant, and the staff were lovely, helpful, and engaging in conversation. We will definitely return on our next trip to Timaru and highly recommend this fabulous eatery to our friends and family. In the photo of our food (from the top left): jalapeño poppers, cheeseburger rolls, poutine in the center, cauliflower, and empanadas.
It was fantastic! When we visited in the afternoon, the place wasn't very crowded, which was nice. The service was excellent, and the meals were delicious. There was plenty of food at reasonable prices. The view of Caroline Bay was beautiful. I highly recommend this restaurant!
I enjoyed the meal, and the staff were very friendly. However, I found it a bit pricey and left feeling slightly hungry. Despite that, I would still consider coming back.
