Stopped here aprox 11am for a break on our way to North Cape. Bathroom not the cleanest ! My friend went to order by the food counter & rudely told to go over by the register. He then asked for an egg on toast & was told it was past the time to order breakfast! The tea & coffee in the pots looked like they had been sitting there for quite a while, so by that time we decided it wasn't a place where we wished to eat!
This restaurant is a convenience store, grocery store and lunch counter masquerading as a restaurant. Seems very popular with locals but very odd to order at the register for the store and find a seat. The food is okay. Food was mostly frozen or canned. Ordered fish and others in the party ordered scallops, all of which were frozen boxed food. This restaurant is not far from a local fishing port where fresh seafood could be had.Disappointing after reading reviews.
My wife and I were touring Prince Edward Island to celebrate Canada's 150th. We were heading for North Cape on the most northerly western tip of the province and decided to stop at Shirley's Café for lunch enroute. When we entered the small local restaurant, no one greeted us or said hello. The menu was above the kitchen area and had a variety of quick bites including burgers, fish and chips, and other sandwiches. When looking at the selections I tried to strike up a conversation with an older lady who later said she was the aunt of the owner. She appeared grumpy and fairly non communicative. The other staff only spoke when we asked questions about the choices. However all the servers seemed to have open and friendly conversations with the locals, many of them being trades people stopping for lunch..even asking how their lunches were. Did any of the staff ask us how we were enjoying our meals? NO. We felt like intruders amongst the local patrons. Maybe it was a bad day for tourists but I would not go back given the opportunity. Fortunately the rest of our travels in the province was a much better experience.
Not friendly to the non locals that's for sure. They also use paper plates to serve your food. Service: Dine in Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: CA$1–10
This is a very relaxed simple cafe. Only three tables to sit at. Anda walk up counter. No soda fountain, but cold bottled or canned drinks. Had a hamburger and fries (which comes with peas as well). My husband had the chicken fingers. The food was good, and well priced. I gave it four stars because I had to add table catsup to my burger because it tasted like it lacked condiments, and my husband felt there was more breading on his chicken than meat. And while there was ample room for more tables, they had limited seating.
