What Ross Keeling doesn't like about Ho Lin Wah Restaurant:
Have not been back for a while so had a quick lunch here last Sunday.Arrived around it was not busy but nearly half occupied after minutes. We ordered the pork chop pineapple bun, Curry beef brisket with rice rolls and house-made fish paste Siu Mai.Dim sim came first, which was nice and recalled my experience in HK. Beef brisket was tenderised and the curry flavour was again similar to HK cafe style. Texture of rice... View all feedback.
Ho Lin Wah is a Hong Kong style eatery at Pineland Plaza. The establishment houses several dining booths with an old school HK interior design taking you back to the pre 1970s era. We were there for weekday dinner and ordered their daily A & B set meal which consists: black pepper beef with capsicum & stir fried chicken in creamy corn. Set meal starter soups arrived within 2min which consists a pork bone based broth with Chinese herbs, chicken feet, carrot and rehydrated shredded veggies. Taste wise was one dimensional and on the thin and salty side. Average at best. 3/5 The black pepper beef was next, containing pre-tenderised sliced beef, onion, capsicum and black pepper all in an oyster sauce roux. Served with rice, you have a wholesome dish great for a cold winter nite. First taste, my goodness it’s salty. The beef was tender and flavourful, veggies crunchy and matched perfectly with the roux’s rich and thick texture. But the over seasoning is hard to look pass even with a big spoonful of rice. 2.5/5 The stir fried chicken in creamy corn was up next with sliced chicken, egg and peas in a cream of corn style sauce. The chicken was nice and tender and matched very well with the mild and sweet sauce. Paired with rice, it’s my wife and daughter’s kinda comfort food. I personally find it lacked seasoning. 3.5/5 Service wise was ok at best. When we arrived, the front sliding door was totally shut. There was a small door opening towards the right which was too narrow for a pram. The waiter saw the issue but took over 5min to open the sliding door (5/5 for trying). Staff here is more friendly then other HK eateries in comparison, but still lacked the care and attention towards diners with young kids. 3/5 Hint: Daily A&B set meals presents great value @ $11.50 (incl: hot drink & soup). Their stir fried noodle varieties is a 3/5 on average.

I like this place. It's very decent Hong Kong fare, with an interesting interior. The food is pretty good and they always have the two choices for lunch specials. When we come here, I usually get the baked rice dishes. But I'm usually pretty happy with everything I've ordered. This time we came on a public holiday so there was a surcharge (15%). Despite that it was still pretty busy by 1pm. Service is alright depending how busy. Usually quite good and straight forward. It was nice they brought kids cutlery without me having to ask. We had the salty fish chicken fried rice and preserved greens duck vermicelli noodle soup. Both reliably good. Recommend this place. They have a range of prices which I appreciate. instagram.com
We dropped in here for dinner and ordered the cashew nut prawn stir fry and pan fried pork and chive dumplings. The stir fry was bland. I know that HK food isn't spicy and doesn't have many strong flavours, but I really would have expected a little more flavour here. The prawns and veges were cooked well enough. The dumplings were also pretty average - oily and not that flavourful. Prices are affordable and service was friendly.
Four of us went there for dinner before going to a play at Sunnybank Theatre Group which is just diagonally across at the traffic lights so most convenient. The café is in Pinelands Plaza Shopping Centre, a small group of shops in a row, mostly Asian cafés/restaurants.We had booked which was just as well on a Friday night as it was very busy. Tables are just café-style with two benches to each table. We and another couple were the only non-Asian people there so I assume the food was authentic. Service was very quick and friendly. Three of us shared three dishes and rice. We were each given a full little bowl of rice but no separate bowl so we put the other food on top to eat. We had beef and vegetables which came as what I think was either pak choy or bok choy, barbecued pork which came with a tasty sauce and lemon chicken. We all enjoyed these. My husband had menu choice scrambled eggs with prawns. We have never seen that on the menu before! The prawns were big and a very generous quantity but my husband said he had a faintly metallic taste in his mouth later. There were quite a number of western choices, which included "baked spaghetti bolognese" and "toast with peanut butter and condensed milk". Our main courses were a generous size as you would expect and were about $14.90 each, excluding rice, so good value. We would be happy to eat there again but would also want to try one of the other eateries in the shopping centre.
