My Colombian future wife and I stumbled on this restaurant in Bogota two years ago. It was near my temporary apartment. Unfortunately, I had stomach problems this night and didn't remember much about the place. At our first wedding, my wife wanted to celebrate something symbolically, so we ended up at El Mexicanito for dinner again. Although mine is apparently the first review on Trip Advisor, reviewers on local Bogota food sites have rated this neighborhood restaurant, its food and service from very good to terrible and some commented it mainly as a lunch place for executives and professionals working in the area. Our anniversary dinner was on a Friday night, but the restaurant was only half full. Its decor is like the similar Mexican restaurant in a series of Los Angeles Stripe Malls: posters of Mexican films and personalities o the walls, basic tables and chairs. Since Colombians generally do not fans of hot (picante) food that Mexicans love. our meal, although tasty was not picante enough for my California-bred expectations, what a reviewer judges nothing mexican. That means the hot sauce offered on the page was quite hot and usually solves this problem. The traditional salty margaritas we both had were as good as anyone I drank elsewhere in my home California and Mexico. We had meat flute as an appetizer with them. The shredded meat was chewing but good, especially carved for me with the very Picante sauce. Both my wife and I had beef fillets with sides typical Mexican salad, roasted beans, a bowl of Spanish rice and a separate flotta. The fillet was excellent and the sides good, except for the overcooked rice we skipped. Dessert was very good, large glasses filled with vanilla and strawberry and red fruits. The restaurant service was fast and warm. Our two meals were expressed in dollars more than reasonable, especially at current dollar-copien exchange rates. The bill came to COP 130,000, about US$40.00. El Mexicanito does not deserve a trip to the big city, but if you stay in barrio Polo Club or close by, it offers a good approach to a decent Mexican meal at bargain prices, especially if you opt for tacos, enchiladas and similar Mexican food lovers, with maybe a beer or a soft drink. For those who would take the Transmilenio bus to the Polo Club, the stop if a few blocks from the Virrey station. Oh, and don't forget to ask for the hot sauce.
