No one seemed to be enjoying their food or the place. Our hotel in Strasbourg was appalled when we told them about our treatment at this establishment.

We had The Sakura menu, and overall, the food was excell... read more I went to Umami with a friend, and were lucky enough to get a table in spite of a short notice booking. We had The Sakura menu, and overall, the food was excellent and the pairing with the wine did work out very well. The portions are not huge, but in a fine dining restaurant that is totally acceptable as the variety of flavors and scents contributes to the sensation of fulfilment. The cuisine is refined, with an excellent use of herbs and spices. Starter was Sashimi of Hamachi with Watermelon tartare and cucumber juice. All elements of the dish had their personality, As a second, there was a fish with a delicious broth. I am less convinced by the third (Angus beef) , which i did not find tender enough. Overall an excellent experience, even though i would have liked to be a bit more surprised, and i would have loved the dishes to have their own personality rather than being the perfect execution of each of the individual component. I would nevertheless recommend it all heartedly.

Aesthetics are certainly a matter of personal preferen... read more Having read a previous critique that was less than complimentary on food decor I'm rather lost for words. Aesthetics are certainly a matter of personal preference and we all found the setting and decor very calming and very pleasant. More importantly the 6 course set menu was excellent, huge range of flavours and very dish delightful, fresh and well presented. We'd recommend it highly, it's tip top on every level.

Had the Umami Menu 5 steps. 4 plates were amazing (lobster, fish, lamp . Dessert wasn't interesting. Wine pairing is weak. You'd better go for a bottle of your choice. Value for money is really good for the experience they offer ; Must visit if you are in Strasbourg!
