In English, Rother Ochsen translates into Red Ox, which is the oldest tavern in Switzerland. Erected in 1446, this tavern features Gothic windows and a facade painted with a humanistic theme. 1446... America wasn't even discovered then! While visiting Stein am Rhein, my friend and I made this a must-see place. We stopped in for drinks. I had a delicious apple cider, my friend had a local beer. The interior is quaint and cozy, lined with hard wood and tables fit snugly together. I was in awe imagining all the generations of people who ate and drank here for the past six hundred years. Amazing. If you're in Stein am Rhein, make sure to stop by Rother Ochsen and make yourself a part of its historic legacy.
My husband and I came here on the recommendation from his work colleagues. We felt like a part of medieval history. The waiter was so personable to these Americans and his choice of dessert was spectacular- a type of Baked Alaska covered in REAL whipped cream and drizzled with strawberry sauce. Perfect!! Certainly added to our European vacation.
