What User doesn't like about El changarro bar & grill:
I was at this restaurant on a Friday night for a friend's birthday. There were 4 couples and we all had a great time. The food was good but not great, I had the carnitas and charizo tacos. The wait staff and patrons were very friendly and the fact that it was karaoke night added to the fun. With people singing and dancing it was a great night, we all agreed this restaurant is grossly underrated. View all feedback.

It is helpful if you can speak Spanish, but pointing at the menu also does the trick. Despite the service, I plan on returning to dine here again soon.
I always get the tacos and papusa. Haven't really tried anything else on the menu, but this is the place to go if you are looking for tocos done right. Think I will head over in a bit!
First off - I was given the unenviable task of choosing the location of my "couples ". birthday dinner. Ten of us....yikes. So much pressure! Wanting to mix it up from the same old - I turned to TA for some suggestions- who knew there are over 320 restaurants in town !The list is topped by some really great places - but I certainly don't completely agree with the rankings. How to tell where the crowd got it wrong? Let's say I got To the bottom of it.!!!The parking lot was empty and dark so there was a moment where we wondered if El changarro was even open . Turns out a lot of the clientele don't have cars- plus there's a " back parking lot" It was karaoke night- but we were here for the food . when we walked in, the place was genuinely packed. I wished I had worn a baseball cap to help fit in . We initially received some odd stares . But the staff was very accommodating and we volunteered to sit in the "loud area" at the back. Had to move a few tables to squeeze everyone in but no problems from all the commotion of moving chairs and tables. Honestly I didn't know any of the songs- not one tune was even familiar - all in Spanish ! But the crooners were in very fine form- the old schnitzel corner tavern was bested! Our drinks orders were promptly taken . " We have everything. Tequila. Corona. "You can't get a margarita or a mojito but the limes for the beer are super generous and juicy. If you don't worry about getting exactly what you ordered or if the order of delivery isn't that important then this is the place for you . The chef had apparently left and we were told the cooks weren't 100% sure how to make everything - but that didn't matter. I just can't remember getting a better value for a sit down "plated" meal in a long, long time . Super winter tomatoes- who's their supplier? chunky avocado - skin on French fries ( not at all like the picture on the menu) admittedly slightly bland but I'm easily crushed by Mexican spice so I'd suggest bringing your own hot sauce if you want some burn. The staff (and the customers too )were genuinely concerned that we were having a great time . Having dinner with great friends is always enjoyable and it has the potential to cloud your review. I really don't think they had any concern about their TA ranking - how refreshing. Selfishly I'm somewhat hesitant to let others know about this hidden gem. - no need to go to Mexico . Bottom line : I'd award El changarro 4 and 1/2 green dots if I could

We received a flyer for a new local Mexican restaurant, so we went in early on a Friday night. There were three tables in the front area, some high stools at a counter and a dark bar like area at the back. No one was eating, but it was early. We really should have turned around and left.We sat at one of the tables and a lovely woman greeted us and brought menus. The menu was in Spanish and English. That's when we looked around and realised that we were the only non-latinos in the place. The other two tables each had a couple engaged in PDAs not usually seen over nachos. The couple simultaneously using the same straw for their soda was really interesting. The décor was very simple, some flags, hand-lettered Spanish-language signs, an ATM machine. After a 45 minute wait, one of our meals arrived. Flautas, which looked good. But were very bland and overcooked. About 10 minutes later an order of quesadillas arrived...this was very nice, but again, very bland. Along with the quesadillas, our appetiser order of nachos arrived...a large serving of chips with onions, tomatoes, cheese and some overcooked steak on top. The theme continued... No salsa, no sour cream...it was bland. The last meal arrived another few minutes later, two small barbacoa tacos. That's when the very nice woman explained that there were two varieties of salsa available on a cart across the restaurant...it was self-serve - patrons were carrying their plates there and scooping the sauce onto their food at the cart. I used my phone to translate one of the signs...it declared that Friday was karaoke night! As we were leaving, a rotating coloured spotlight was turned on and added to the mood and festivities.
