Strangely we... read more We were defeated by the crowds at our first attempt to get close on a warm summer's evening but managed to get in for lunch a couple of days later. Strangely we found no disabled parking bays in the vicinity. The setting by the river is lovely, and the place was deservedly busy with people having a good time. The food was good- typical German- and the service especially friendly.

Looking for a classic German beer garden experience? this is the one to come to.the Alter Hammer is a favorite meeting spot for locals, (my in-laws have been co... read more Looking for a classic German beer garden experience? this is the one to come to.the Alter Hammer is a favorite meeting spot for locals, (my in-laws have been coming here and meeting friends here for years) and you'll understand why -- it's a great location right by the river (the Rhine) and has a huge outdoor area where you can enjoy the river views and people watching. it's ideal for kids, as there is plenty of space to run around and explore within view of the tables. it's an easy walk from the sights of Speyer or by bike.it's a typical Biergarten menu & prices; you do pay for the view a little bit, but it's not at all touristy-overpriced. food is decent, and there's good variety. great beers and wurst (sausage). there are a few vegetarian options.TIP: if it's a crowded day (esp. summertime) and you see some spots open at a table that's occupied, simply ask politely if you can join. people are generally friendly, and culturally it's totally normal to share a table with strangers if there are places free.

They offer a variety of meals and they are huge portions. My wife I should have shared. The food is delicious.
