Contribute FeedbackMama Thai presents a curious culinary landscape, where opinions diverge sharply. Some patrons cherish its authentic flavors, praising the fresh ingredients and unique dishes like the chicken laksa. The welcoming atmosphere and BYO policy enhance the dining experience, offering good value for money. Conversely, others lament poor service and inflated prices for mediocre portions. Complaints about cold food and rude staff are not uncommon. While the decor may lack modernity, it exudes charm. Ultimately, Mama Thai appears to be a hidden gem for some, while others find it a disappointment—a testament to the unpredictability of the dining experience.
Good Thai, okay customer service, small portions, kinda expensive. The food was good; nothing exciting. I had red curry; it does not come with rice. First time I’ve had curry at a Thai restaurant that doesn’t come with rice. You have to order rice separately £3. I should have taken a photo of how small the portions were; comical. I’ve had my share of Thai Iced tea around the world; and this one was kinda weird. I’m pretty sure she used the blender...I don’t know how to describe it, but it wasn’t traditional Thai Iced tea. Customer service, eh. I did more greeting and talking than the hostess/waitress. I’m not sure if this is something done in England, but myself and another table had to ask for a glass of water; wasn’t offered. I thought the food to be overpriced given the portions. FYI; there’s 10% “discretionary service” charge lol what the heck is that?! Maybe this would be okay for takeout/delivery, but I wouldn’t dine again.
I want to start by saying that we have ordered takeaways from Mama Thai for over 4 years now. We used to live nearby and, despite sometimes inconsistent quality of food, we continued to order from them even after we moved further out. We've noticed over the years that the customer service has got increasingly worse. There is a sense of complete disinterest whenever they get an order wrong/it takes twice the time promised etc. Once, when I had to go all the way back and tell them one of the dishes was wrong, the manager (who I believe most of these issues stem from) when prompted, compensated me with 20p (no joke). On a recent order, one of the dishes didn't turn up, and when we rang to ask if they could sort this they palmed off any responsibility, and told us to sort it out with the delivery company, even though it was very clearly their mistake. Not only this, but the food on many occasions has become increasingly sub standard. After 4 years of loyal service, we are sad to write this review but feel others should at least be aware of how poor this place has become. We will no longer be ordering from Mama Thai.
We used to go to Mama Thai and the food was fine for a cheap local restaurant but we stopped going as the food went downhill. We decided to give you another chance and ask for a meal to take. It was the worst food to take. The shrimp meatballs were a flat plate of cooked dough. My red curry was even worse. It was an oil stain on top of a little chicken and vegetables. My wife had the yellow curry and that was a fine liquid that contained some chicken and vegetables that seemed very suspicious. When I called the restaurant to complain, the manager shouted at me to threaten me to sue me! It's a shame because it's good to have a local Thai restaurant, but I'll never step back on this place.
I will never return to this restaurant where the staff is extremely rude as well as the quality of food is low-level. The appetizers were served after 20 minutes and 1 was also wrong with the request. Also they are not clear about the alcoholic beverage policy: they do not need it and you are told that you can bring them but then charge a pound per person for this service. Also the portions are tiny and therefore the prices exaggerated.
I used to frequent this restaurant often when I lived nearby. I always praised the place for its authentic and delicious food. However, on a recent visit, we brought our own wine and beer from the supermarket, which cost us £7. When we received our bill at MamiThai, they had charged us £4 for the wine and £2 for the beer as a BYOB fee. I was not pleased with having to pay for these items twice.
