Great vegan dégustation at a reasonable price! Great staff and nice atmosphere. Been there a few times and definitely going to be coming back! Was especially touching that the staff took a photo of us with their Polaroïd camera, what a lovely idea! View all feedback.
What Luke Janga doesn't like about Red Cabbage Food + Wine:
The food looked tasted OK but the price was a bit steep I thought. There was very little on the big plate sides like Vegetables were an extra $9. When they came the only thing on the plate was a circle of Broccoli. View all feedback.
This is one of my top favourite restaurants in Perth. We go for the degustation special, the 7 course dego for $69 pp. The bread was exceptional, and the butter was spreadable and flavoursome. The stand out courses for me were the Ocean Catch with kimchi; the salmon is cooked to perfection, the cheese course- cashel blue cheese, cheddar shortbread and pumpkin spread and the dessert of deconstructed lemon meringue.
Finally got to try this place. Tried booking a few years ago but called 3 times, even left a message but noone bothered to return the call, so we gave up. This time a friend booked it for her birthday. They happened to have a $69 degustation special that night so, without question, we all decided to go for that. Overall, it was a good experience. The food was nice. Maybe not the best degustation I've had but still nice.
This restaurant started out as a husband and wife team 10 years ago as a refreshing, creative a la carte away from the busy food epicentre of Mends Street, but despite its isolated locality situated on the corner of the South Perth freeway entrance/exit, it still attracts dozens to a unique, original dining experience, and I'm glad South Perth can offer more than the usual Mediterranean quisine. The service is attentive, the waiters are neatly attired and the food arrives as an artistic statement on every dish and the flavours are tremendous. The standard has not dropped, only increased since the restaurants beginnings. The only small criticism is that the wine list needs to expand. There was not one Sauvignon Blanc on the wine list? Though we settled for a Perongerups reisling, which was a pleasing substitute. This is unquestionably one of Perths best dining retreats, and like Friends at the Hyatt, has a comfortable family or homely appeal. A must and will be there again.
Visited Red Cabbage for the first time last night after years of driving past and always wanting to check it out. My partner and I ordered the degustation and we weren't disappointed. Each course was beautifully presented and the flavour combinations were amazing. I ordered the fish (salmon) for main and it was perfectly cooked. My partner ordered the lamb main and said it was some of the best lamb he had ever tasted. The staff were friendly, attentive and we felt very well looked after. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Can't wait to go back and try their a la carte menu!
We all know that cabbage has to be done right or, well, no one likes it! And so when the promise of a mid week degustation of seven courses for under $70 came up, it seemed like a good opportunity to test the cabbage patch. To start on the good points.... 1. Presentation. Degustation food should always look good, and most places do this well. RC was no exception. The choice of stone ware dishes complemented the food well and effort had clearly gone into plating up. 4.0 2. The palate cleanser of watermelon sorbet, frosted grapes and granita was both generous, tasty and effective. A nice little mid dining treat. 4.0 3. The pre-dessert of pumpkin ganache, pear sorbet, blue cheese and white chocolate crumbs was my favourite dish of the night and I am wary of pumpkin in any form (unless hollowed out for Halloween). 4.0 4. The cocktails. My advise to anyone is this...overcome any sense of trepidation for the combination of gin, white chocolate and lavender and enjoy them together in a tasty aperitif. 5.0 Now, unfortunately this tale of the table must turn toward the negatives.... 1. More pickles than preserving season in Tuscany. Some pickled ingredients are ok, pop them in everywhere to emphasise whatever it is one is trying to emphasise just makes the whole thing taste like a cockney's fish and chips. 2.0 2. The wine list. Filling twice the number of pages because you wrote the same wine twice in the 'by the glass' section and reiterated it in the 'by the bottle' section, doesn't make your list twice as long or twice as exciting. For a place that is 'Food + Wine' I expected more. 2.0 The wines were not of poor quality or anything, just felt a little misled by the banner headline and lack of offerings. 3. The lack of wow. I don't mind not being wow'd by every dish, but one stand out would have been nice. I did have a favourite dish (as mentioned) but nothing I would have classed as amazing or 'wow'. On the upside, there were some 'wows' and 'OMGs' from one of our number over the chocolate mouse and peanut butter dessert. But one wow does not a wonder make. 2.5 4. The beetroot ganache. So....the colourful descriptions of this dish were only matched by the lurid beetroot. A brief transcript of the round the table taste testing is as follows: "Hmmmmmmmm ????" "What's it like?" "Consistency of the stuff you find on the floor of a rabbit hutch..." in reference to the celeriac offering....(brief tangential conversation about rabbits) "And the beetroot?" "Ahhh consistency of wet chalk....????" "So, not great then..?" (Then, from the least decorous member of the merry band of diners) "it looks like ...." well for the sake of good taste that last comment can't be mentioned. To be fair, that was the only 'bad' dish, not that the lack of amazing dishes balanced the scale any. 1.5 5. The ambi-notsomuch. Intimate diners beware, the open plan and slightly 'cold' surrounds will do nothing for your special dinner. Music, whilst suitably background in volume, was an interesting choice of popular pop and house songs from the 90s. Odd and a little distracting. 2.5 6. 'Table Tetris'. Seven courses are awesome. Seven courses of cutlery per setting mean that fitting everyone in around the silverware was not an easy or pleasant task. Only having two (albeit reasonably attentive) staff probably had something to do with this. We booked...allocate resources accordingly would be my suggestion. 2.0 So....in sum (and at the limits of your attention and my creativity), Red Cabbage promised a lot but failed to deliver. The mid week prices soothed our disappointment some, bit at still (with wines etc) near $100 a head, we are not asking for perfection on a plate, but to be underwhelmed was disappointing. Cabbage not done well!!! Wouldn't head back as there are lots of other places around.
