We visited this delightful Inn on our way south in our Motor Home to Cornwall, we stayed overnight in the car park with electric plug in for just £10 the local cider in the bar was amazing and a very reasonable price, we had an evening meal and my scampi was the best I have ever had, highly recommend the place, also staff very friendly and attentive even though they were quite busy. What T898WVjennyb doesn't like about California Country Inn:
We visited on recent holiday, both tried the chefs chicken and leek pie. It was awful and certainly didn’t resemble a pie. It was over cooked chicken in soup with a piece of pastry dropped on top. The chicken was so dry despite the soup it was floating in. Would not return. View all feedback.
My second visit, first Sunday dinner. wow! lush! right homemade fry, exactly what we needed! crispy bratkartoffeln petersnip, delicate meat, creamy cauliflower, green bean, black carrot mix. all cuts tasty gravy . selection of the cuts. Oh, the staff was beautiful too!
We have chosen this place, as they join our home and we will definitely come back. the pub is historical and original with a beautiful beer garden, the personal was friendly and the eating was amazing. we came as couple, but families/children were welcomed and so were dogs (in certain rooms). even the natives have welcomed us.
I had the most incredible steak at this restaurant, it was the best I have ever tasted and absolutely delicious. The pub itself is beautiful and sitting in front of the roaring fire is such a perfect setting.
We decided to dine at this restaurant while staying in the Colmer estate as a family. We have young children and were prepared to order our meals. However, the owner approached us and rudely asked us to gather our belongings, including moving my son from the high chair. His behavior was so unacceptable that I am amazed the restaurant is still in business. I would strongly advise avoiding this place. Additionally, this was not the first time he had been rude, as we had a similar experience the night before. It seems that this behavior is not just a one-time occurrence. Best of luck to him, as he will need it.
After dining at California many times over the years, I must say that it has deteriorated significantly. What was once a nice, high-quality dining establishment with friendly staff is now not worth the visit. When we tried to book a table in the restaurant area, we were told we would be the only ones there, so we opted for a table in the bar. Upon arrival, the owner, who seemed indifferent, directed us to a sad-looking table next to a pillar in the center of the bar area and handed us a menu, saying we had to order food at the bar. We chose our starters and main courses from a basic pub menu, but when I tried to place our order, I was told they weren't serving starters because the kitchen was too busy. I was frustrated that this information wasn't given to us earlier. When I tried to order my wife's main course, I was told they didn't have it available that night. Disappointed, I left the menus on the bar, booked a table at another venue, paid for our drinks, and left. The manager didn't seem to care. If you enjoy being treated poorly by someone who appears uninterested in their own business, you might feel at home here. Otherwise, I would suggest staying away until there is a change in ownership. I won't be returning until then.
