I had breakfast here last Saturday and loved it. The staff were attentive and funny. The coffee was strong and full flavoured. I ordered one of the specials, a lovely shredded ham and fresh peas on sourdough toast. The baked treats on the counter looked delicious and is definitely another reason to return soon! What Richard Moore doesn't like about Merriweather:
after my brekkie in the espresso kitchen I went to my car, which was parked from the road down on the road. when I arrived, I then realized that the parking space was right outside this caffe, so also a take-away coffee for the trip back to my office.Nun, this time is much better than last time on my first overcheck in relation to my first overservice. barista is very passionate (can change the personal). after said... Great coffee and excellent food. Service was a bit slow but very friendly. Nice and close to Novotel if you want an alternative to hotel breakfast.
Great coffee, laid back vibe, friendly staff once you is a regular bruv. They also give you a discount for BYO cup which is good for the environment and those caffeine receptors in your dome!
While the area has a few nice selections for dinner, Southbank is certainly not the place I would venture for brunch/lunch as it features a large number of commercialised restaurants and mediocre food. However, for close place near the cinemas, Merriweather cafe was our pick. <br/ <br/ Food: Menu was simple and straightforward, with a main focus on eggs. We ordered 2 open omelettes 1 mushroom and 1 ham and my other friend ordered poached eggs and sourdough smoked salmon. Food was definitely satisfying for empty stomachs, with the eggs very well cooked the omelettes light and fluffy, and the poached eggs cooked for the right amount of time as it had a good run. The toasts had a nice crisp and were not overly crunchy/hard. If anything, the food was good but perhaps a bit too ordinary. I also later ordered a green juice and it was exceptionally refreshing on a humid day (3.5/5)<br/ <br/ Service: Good service, the food did not take long to arrive (10 15 mins) and a waiter who was on her break even went out of her way to hand us our menus before returning to her break. Environment was warm and welcoming, definitely kid friendly with many hip, old school board games. (4/5)<br/ <br/ For Southbank, Merriweather is not a bad option.
Brief menu but well chosen alternatives with a focus on eggs and breakfast/brunch and sustainable ingredients. The mushrooms on rye and avocado on sourdough were both very good with nice accompaniments (hummus and vegetable choices). Coffee also superior with rich flavour, citrus notes and very smooth finish. Range of cakes and sandwiches also available. Pleasant outlook over Musgrave Park. Attentive service.
Great food and coffee but a warning to all if you are ordering takeaway coffee, find something to do while you wait... Go for a run, maybe see a movie, or climb a mountain. I waited for 30 minutes for a takeaway PICCOLO, and watched multiple times as the barista kept making other takeaway coffees before my order. I had 2 orders before mine initially but ended up waiting for 6 coffees to be made before he even touched mine. Half an hour wait for a 100ml coffee. Not worth it. <br/ <br/ In saying that, I will be back. I love this place. But not for my Saturday morning takeaway piccolo fix. I may have to go elsewhere for that.
