Many years ago when th... read more We are very lucky in Sonthofen to have 3 greek restaurants. Each one has its own fascination. Poseidon is probably the first established. Many years ago when the present owners took over the premises, it had recently been very extensively renovated; expensive wood paneling of the best quality. This basic ambience has been retained over the years and slowly but surely developed towards a genuine greek feeling. Everything is snug and comfortable. Poseidon is always full which of course is a good sign but then again you have to book! Welcome is the feeling you get on arrival. Service is immediate, friendly and efficient. The menu is just right, not too much, not to little. The food is excellent, well cooked, good products and great taste. The starters, main courses and desserts are all of the same top quality. The prices are fair. One is usually served by the owner who of course can therefore keep her eye on the quality. Why only 4 and not 5 points? Unfortunately there is no place to eat outside. Nevertheless we have visited Poseidon many, many times and will continue to do so.

We have never been disappointed and can recommend Poseidon to everybody. You enter the restaurant to be met by an ambience one has come to expect in greek restaurants outside Greece. We actually go there to eat the food not to criticise or pick fault at the interior decoration, or sit there bemoaning the fact we are sitting in southern Bavaria and not on a greek island. More often than not the boss herself welcomes you with a warm, friendly smile. No fast food here. You have more than enough time to choose from the excellent selection of greek specialities, and in the 20 years we have been going there the menu card itself has always been clean. I have lost count the number of times we have been greeted with a glass of ouzo at the countless greek taverna we have had the joy to eat at on so many greek islands. I would say we asked maybe half the times if we wanted it with ice or not. Half the times it just came and we drank the free drink in the Spirit it was given. The waiters and waitresses at POSEIDON have always been curteous and friendly, and any questions about the menu are always answered and special wishes catered for. Today, 22.12.2013, we ordered the warm anti pasti platter. The portion was generous, they always are at Poseidon, the food well presented on the plate and it was piping hot. The domades, baked giant beans, etc. tasted as good as ANY we have eaten in Greece itself. Having visited various greek islands over the past 25 years we do have a bit of knowledge in this respect. The warm starters were delicious, and the bread served with it was fresh, warm and tasty. We ordered the fried fish platter as our main course. As we know, from coming here often, the food is prepared to order. Having actually been in the kitchen, which one does when in Greece, the fish is first fried when ordered. In other restaurants in Sonthofen the fish is already battered and fried and is put back into the deep-fat frier just before serving ! Not at Poseidon. The fish was wonderful, the gratin potatoes were done to perfection, and the tangy dip was just the way I remember it being served on Patmos in 1989 ! The main course too was served piping hot, which is the way we like it. Infact, having eaten too many fried fish platter to remember at tavernas across Greece, the platter served at Poseidon is on a par. Indeed when I tucked in to the main course I was transported to a fantastic island-hopping,back-pack holiday I had six wonderful months long in 1992.During our meal - which lasted 90 minutes in all - we were served by both waiters and the boss herself. A request for another portion of the excellent gratin potatoes was met, and wasn`t charged extra either ! When I asked why not the boss said she was happy we had enjoyed the food. I have never been able to get original greek coffee at any greek restaurant I have been to in Germany, so we always order a Cappuccino. We will definitely be visiting Poseidon in Sonthofen again, and again. We can highly recommend it to anyone wanting excellent food. If you want REAL greek food served by greek waiter with REAL greek ambience then I suggest booking a flight to one of the many islands or the mainland. If you are in Germany`s southern most town, and don`t fancy a long flight plus transfers there and back, then I recommend Sonthofen`s legendary, and best, greek restaurant.
