Our tour went WAY out of our way to get to the little town of Sognono and lunch at Grotto Redorta. The place is very cute, service was excellent, and the food acceptable. They served us a whole trout (head and tail included), which freaked some people out. But after they showed how to easily get two fillets without bones, everyone seemed to enjoy it. Was served with polenta, which was great. The appetizer course was a charcuterie plate of cheeses and meats. Dessert was a walnut ice cream with a liquor generously drizzled over it.

If you are visiting Lavertezzo in Tocino then continue driving to the end of the valley where in Sonogno you will find this wonderful restaurant. Sit outside under vines being served by a group of incredibly warm and friendly woman whilst looking into the valley. It will be a beautiful end to your visit to the valley

Very authentic restaurant with a small selection of local specialities. They taste really good and are very nicely presented. The ladies running the place are highly entertaining.Prices are very fair. There is a large outside area ready for a drink with the locals on a balmy night.

My daughter and I visited this lovely ancient village on a day that was slightly damp and drizzly at times. There are several places to eat in the village but we were lucky enough to choosethe Redorta. The Grotto certainly has character and guests have the choice of eating outside under the vines or inside where there are open stairways - might be difficult for some elderly orinfirm customers. We were served - entertained even - by a waitress with a great sense of humour and were promptly served the had tasty dish of Aglio e olio which we had ordered along with a massive salad consisting of a variety of truly fresh tasty vegetables. After this, we were unable to manage a dessert and contented ourselves with just a cappuccino. The atmosphere and furnishings here are, as one might expect, rusticand one needed a sense of humour when visiting the toilet asgents and ladies have to use the same "waiting area" - one toilet only for the ladies, and I have to guess about the number for men. Not the best loo experience then, but there have been worse, and at least it was clean!I would add that both the Water fall and the Museum are wellworth a visit - the latter had quite a number of exhibits which reflected the hard life endured by those living in these villages in the not-so-distant past. I was particularly interested to readof the plight of young boys of 13 and 14 who were sold to chimney sweeps in Milan - since there was no livelihood available locally. I was so taken with their story that I have ordered a book by Lisa Tetzner (a German lady) entitled,"The Black Brothers". Sadly, there was not much information in English translation in the Exhibition but the curator, or lady in charge, was very helpful and there were a couple of leaflets, in English, which are interesting.

Sitting outside for lunch in such a beautiful spot as Sonogno on a nice weekday before too many visitors arrive already puts this grotto into positive territory. The exceptionally friendly staff made the experience even better. Each of the four of us enjoyed our different polenta lunches very much. I have eaten in several different grotti and would rate this among the better preparations I’ve had. The only downside I can cite is the house merlot is mediocre, so I advise choosing something else.
