O Castelo restaurant is part of the Algueira winery which is one of the best of the Ribeira Sacra and whose commitment to elevate the quality of the products in the region is of major note. The menu features traditional Galician fare made with a lot of care. Clearly, the team behind the kitchen has great mothers and grandmothers who have influences such deep cuisines. The 'croquetas de cocido ' are not to be missed and neither are any of their game dishes like the venison and the wild boar.
We were traveling and have eaten it quite a few restaurants around northern Spain and this place of them recommended by my sister-in-law and so my wife and I went for lunch. It is located in a reasonably remote area but fairly easy to get to, on a vineyard. You can visit the venue as a person interested in testing great wines and tour of the facility and do and winetasting and or you can just go to the restaurant. We chose to just go to the restaurant. The meal was perfect. Everything was wonderful and the service was great. I recommend the cannelloni with oxtail. There's not a lot I can really add to that because the Mule was just good and the food was well prepared and well seasoned and everything tasted great the service was really excellent. We will definitely be returning. Just as a sidenote, you are in a location that is quite close to some beautiful views of the canyon in the river and after eating we went for a lovely drive to taking the views..
Our Galician wine tour took us to the Algueira winery where we first had a boat cruise with absolutely stunning vineyard scenery with such steep slopes. This was followed by a visit to the excellent winery with Fabio the son of Fernando who is the ultimate owner and founder of the operation. The hand crafted wines were lovely and the theme continued over to having lunch in their restaurant. As anticipated the food is wholesome and rustic and typical of the region unfortunately several of the portions of fish served for main courses were rather too large which made cooking a little inconsistent. Starters and deserts though were both very good. All accompanied by more wines from the winery. This is a really lovely spot and the whole day experience including lunch is well worth doing. If you re lucky enough to experience the river cruise on the Sil river on a good clear day you will come across breathtaking scenery the likes of which you would rarely see. Well worth doing.
On arriving we were asked if we would like to listen to a presentation by Fernando, the owner of the winery, as it was to be in Spanish this could have been a problem as our Spanish was extremely limited. However, thanks to Claudio this was not to be a problem as she translated for us. A very good presentation and tasting it was too. We had also reserved a table for lunch and were so pleased that we did as it was really enjoyable and the food very good and large portions. my husband started with a tomato and mozzarella salad and I had a tempura of king prawns and seaweed. For mains, a beef stew cooked in the winery red wine, and I had lamb chops and salad. Mike had a crumble of berries and we finished with coffee. We also had four glasses of the winery wines and the bill came to €90.75. The waiters were very very helpful and when our waiter knew we were passionate about wines, he gave us one to taste that was not on the wine list. Fernando also walked around having a chat to all the guests.
