Unfortunately, finding authentic Latin American food in Sydney can be a challenge, unless you know where to look. If you've been to Argentina, you may be familiar with alfajores - caramel sandwiched between two biscuits and covered in chocolate, coconut, or icing sugar. One popular brand in Argentina is Havanna. On a recent trip, I bought some to bring back to Sydney, only to have them confiscated by customs due to dairy content. Thankfully, Confiteria Maciel in Smithfield makes their own alfajores with authentic Dulce de Leche. Run by Argentinians, they also offer pastries, tarts, and croissants. Though they have an espresso machine, I opted for the alfajores - available in milk, dark, and white chocolate, as well as icing sugar. They were delicious and reasonably priced. The shop is small with no seating, operating as take-away only. The service is polite, with EFTPOS available. While there may not be much else nearby, if you're craving authentic Argentinian treats in Sydney, this is the place to go.
