The Trenchard Arms - Singapore

Trenchard Arms is an absolutely excellent establishment !! Plenty of fine British and Australian ale. I would recommend this place to any and all !!!

Our first night in Singapore landed us at The Trenchard Arms. We were immediately greeted by a gregarious, charismatic gentleman, named Richard the owner. He brought us some beers after offering a few recommendations and engaged us in an informative, interesting conversation about a variety of topics. We immediately felt welcome. The fries we ordered were as excellent as the service. I would highly recommend this British Pub to any traveler coming through the Katong area of Singapore.

Fate brought us to the Trenchard Arms. On a visit to I12 Katong we made for the exits after hanging around for an hour and planned our next move. Straight ahead was Joo Chiat which we had explored previously. To the right was the length of East Coast Road we have explored previously, so left it was. After a few minutes walk we passed Rabbit, Carrot, Gun and its neighbor and owned by the same people, The Trenchard Arms. A cozy shophouse with a menu written in chalk on the wall with cocktails, beers, wines and a food menu. The Trenchard of the name helps explains why there are a couple of Spitfire seats to lounge in. Ask the owner for an explanation if you are not sure. Checking the one Yelp review didn't give us confidence, but something about the inviting ambience made us stop for a beer and a whisky. With an extensive range of Scotch we struggled to pick one, finally settling for Laphroaig and my current favorite Asian beer, and very un-British, Asahi Super Dry. After a couple more drinks, inevitably we decided it was time for dinner and took a look at both the Rabbit, Carrot, Gun menus as well as The Trenchard Arms bar menu. We settled on the bacon, avocado and Stilton sandwich, and a classic unsophisticated (was there any other kind? British dish from the seventies, Chicken in a basket. After a short wait and another whisky, this time a Lagavulin and yet another Asahi, the food arrived. My disappointment at the Chicken being served in a box, albeit a very nice box, was offset by the taste. Four chicken drumsticks served with Fries. It was good, with some nice crispiness and flavor. The sandwich with bacon, avocado and Stilton was the star though. Served on a substantial roll, the sandwich was wonderful, with the bacon, avocado and cheese flavors well balanced and distinct, with none of them dominating the sandwich. After we finished and realized that we could not fit in the Spitfire seats, we consoled ourselves with ordering dessert. Sticky Toffee pudding and salted caramel pudding were served up in small but tasty dishes. Both got two thumbs up through muted munching sounds. Washing the the meal down with more Asahi (hic! , it was time to be on our way, with a vow to return and try more.

Trenchard Arms is a gastropub located on East Coast Road right next to Rabbit Carrot Gun. It specializes in craft beers and ales I'm a fan of the Speckled Hen. Cozy ambience inside there are even some sofas for you to sit on if you so wish. I have heard from multiple sources that the food is nothing to shout at but I will definitely be back for the beers.
