What Alexandre S doesn't like about Good Fortune Restaurant:
We ordered take out. Fried rice was made with old rice. Dry and hard. Also, the main ingredient besides the old rice was frozen vegetables. Really, that is quite lazy. The chow mein had no seasoning or sauce to speak of. Boiled noodles quickly stir fried with vegetables and a bit of meat sitting on top, all bland. The sweet and sour pork was mostly breading with a pale red sauce that looked like it had been watered d... View all feedback.

Took Mother for Mothers Day. Been going to restaurants for 55 years on 4 different continents, lived in Vancouver 23 years, also in Chinatown. Been here three times. Myself and my guests were not happy with the food. . Every dish had the vegetables undercooked, and the whole meal was OK. I mentioned this when I paid, she didn’t seem to care. My mom is 89 and she wasn’t impressed with the food. Won’t be back.
I went for a nice Chinese dinner at the Good Fortune restaurant with a friend yesterday and was very disappointed. Although the food presentation and the restaurant was lovely, the food itself told a different story. My meal started with wonton soup and they tasted of freezer burn. An omen of the rest of the meal to come. A couple of dishes we ordered had shrimp/prawns and though they looked good were cooked to perfection their veins were not removed. So we were served shrimp/prawn poop! I spoke to our server about them and I was told that 'the cooks don 't remove the veins '. I felt 2 things at that moment- queasy and angry. I felt like we had been treated contemptuously. I know the cooks are busy. I get it. But if they are too busy to devein their shrimp they can get them already deveined. Heck I can even go to Walmart and get deveined shrimp. If they are going to cut corners there are better options. I would like to see their cooks take some pride in serving real quality and beautiful meals. They have so much potential but what we were served instead was 'good enough '. I did not make a scene for the sake of my friend but I and my large family and friends will not be patronizing this restaurant anymore until they take more pride in what they serve- and devein their shrimp/prawns!

About 30 years ago I would travel to Victoria to visit my parents in Brentwood Bay (near Sidney) and we 'd get Chinese takeout. It was always from The Good Fortune Restaurant, because we could always count on it to be very good.....even if not exceptional. I can 't remember ever having a poorly prepared dish. Now fast forward to today. The restaurant has moved out of its old spot and is in a brand new building. A very comfortable atmosphere with a lovely aquarium where we can sit and watch the fish. And the food is still very good. We 've had their war wanton twice and are so impressed by the freshness and flavour of the vegetables, the meats, and the prawns. None of the 'stale ' taste that you sometimes get in Chinese style barbeque pork. (But then you don 't get all that much of it in their war wonton soup and this could cause fights as to who gets the couple pieces of barbeque pork). This last time we also had the chicken in black bean sauce and it was also very nice fresh, perfectly cooked and moist chicken, and a somewhat salty but pretty good black bean sauce. Reasonably priced too, and good service. My only complaint is that the fortune in our Wings fortune cookies weren 't fortunes at all, but (1) a platitude and (2) a personality assessment. But we 'll be back.
