Authentic place serving really good tempura which was really freshhhh. The chefs cooked it right in front of us and the batter to seafood/vegetable ratio was great. It was not too oily and the batter was fried just nice with the item inside still retaining it's freshness and not too heavy, definitely one of the batter tempura places : View all feedback.
What Zina M doesn't like about Tempura Shinjuku Tsunahachi Souhonten:
If I’m being totally honest I think it was alright. Nothing special. Not the best tempura I had in Japan, a little over priced and small portions. But it has a good location and good reputation so the price goes hand in hand. View all feedback.
I think once someone understands and learns about the difficulty behind making good tempura, you begin to realize how great this place is. You’ll have to get creative about how you want to use the salts, dipping sauce, and grated add ons to suit your taste but the tempura itself was stellar. I did the 2700¥ tempura set along with a scallop. quick service chefs are attentive food comes out quickly and they help explain what they think are good flavor combos tempura was great, fish shrimp cuts were also tasty in isolation Would happily recommend and return.
This is one of the restaurants that we will never miss on each of our trips to Tokyo. Apparently, it has been around for more than 100 years. Usually, there is a queue during dinner, and will take about 30 minutes before you are invited inside the restaurant, not to be seated at the dining table but to queue again. All in all, it took me about 40 minutes of waiting time. One may be allocated counter seats or table seats in a room. I prefer to be at the counter as it provides the whole experience of seeing the preparation of the tempura. Besides, it also allows the chef to pace his preparation and serving of each dish. The staff was efficient and friendly. I requested to be seated at the counter but was not expecting them to accommodate me as there were 5 of us. To our delightment, we were allocated to the counter on the first floor. Everyone ordered different types of tempura sets, but it is always Zen Tempura set for me. The quality of food has always been within my expectations and looking forward to visiting here again.
While the price seems a little on the high side, we really enjoyed the food a lot. The chef was attentive and paced the serving of tempura accordingly so that our food is hot. When we ordered additional egg yolk, he even ran out to get more rice for us to go with the egg yolk. We didn’t have to queue too although we came at 6pm. If you are ok to spend a little more, this place is highly recommended.
Food was so good we forgot to take photos.. Here's the first dish and last item we had.. Tempura ice cream was interesting
This is one of the best tempura restaurants in Tokyo. They have several locations in Tokyo and this is the original store. Their serve great tempura dishes and sets.
