Description

An off-the-beaten-path Mid‑Michigan spot earns praise for creative, generously portioned dishes—steaks, seafood, fish tacos, shrimp-and-grits and chicken-and-waffles—and a strong cocktail and wine program. Guests cite friendly staff, clean rooms and reasonable prices with a menu that ranges from casual sandwiches to fine-dining entrees. Experiences are uneven: service can be slow, timing and temperature inconsistent, and menu descriptions sometimes inaccurate. Still, many call it a hidden gem worth trying for inventive mains, hearty portions and well-crafted drinks.

I visited a couple of years ago and vividly remember the delicious steaks and entrees. Unfortunately, the menu has since shifted to mostly bar food for lunch and dinner. We had to wait an excessively long time for our meals, and once I finally received my wrap, I couldn't even eat it. The chicken was mushy and lacked freshness.

So we went here for the first day of them serving breakfast and the wait for our food was pretty long after our food was ordered. We didn't complain because, well, like I said it was their first day. The problem was that the waitress didn't bring any of the accompying condiments (ie. Salsa for the breakfast burrito, syrup/butter for the pancakes) until after the food came to the table. Which we had to wait a little bit for them letting our semi hot food get cooler. I ordered the breakfast egg rolls and there was an option for bacon OR sausage. I ordered the sausage and someone else ordered the bacon. The other persons came out first looking a bit over cooked but having both bacon AND sausage. When questioned the waitress said the chef must have just mixed them. The other person said it was fine. I don't like bacon but I said it was fine because I thought mine were coming right out as well. She said she was going to check. Well, mine didn't come for like another 15 minutes (enough time for the waitress to make sure I would get what I ordered) but when it did it had both meat options as well. Granted, mine looked like they were cooked perfectly but the bacon really ruined the taste for me. None of the people in my party were very impressed but said that we understood with it being new for them, but we thought we'd give them another shot for dinner because they've been doing that for awhile. That was Sunday morning, and we gave it another try on Wednesday night. First clue should have been that we were the only table in the place the entire time we were there. This time I ordered the patty melt with waffle fries. My waffle fries came out extremely cold and my patty melt was beyond dry. When the waitress came back to the table I let her know and she offered to get me something else, to which I declined. Mostly because I had already eaten half of the sandwhich and some of the appetizer that we had ordered so that was sufficient and also because by the rest of the peoples reactions to their food nothing seemed a better choice. Needless to say, we feel like we did our due diligence but we will not be returning to this resturant. I will say that the wait staff was very friendly and accommodating, the prices are reasonable and the establishment is clean but that's definitely not enough reason for me to return for dining.

For my main course, I had mushroom ravioli served in a purée made with green peas. The chef’s use of various spices in the purée was excellent and added great flavor. My wife ordered the New York strip steak, which looked fantastic when it was served. We both enjoyed cocktails with our meal—mine was a tequila-based Mojito and my wife had a strawberry Mamosa. It was evident that care was taken in preparing both drinks, indicating a skilled bartender on staff. The only significant area for improvement would be the service. We found ourselves waiting a bit too long for certain parts of our meal, especially considering that the restaurant was nearly empty at the time. The server was polite and well-mannered, but it seemed he was the only one working that evening. Maybe they have better staffing on weekends? Overall, a pleasant experience with some room for improvement.

Our waitress was outstanding; she answered all our questions and offered excellent recommendations. We enjoyed appetizers, dinner, and drinks, all of which exceeded our expectations. The drink menu, crafted by the bartender, featured some really fun cocktails to choose from. One standout appetizer was the goat cheese, which was absolutely fabulous. For my main course, I had the grill, which included lamb, chicken, scallops, vegetables, and potatoes. The portions were generous, and everyone raved about their meals. Although we were too full for dessert, the staff surprised us with chocolate drizzled balls, which made for a perfect conclusion to our wonderful dinner. The service was a bit slow, but I expected that at a finer dining establishment, where they encourage you to savor your food and enjoy conversation between courses. While it's a bit off the beaten path, it’s definitely worth the detour if you find yourself in the area.
