Eighteen58 - Sewanee
Eighteen58
Description
Eighteen58 at The Sewanee Inn blends rustic charm and fine‑dining ambition with reliably warm, attentive service and hit‑or‑miss cuisine. Standouts like prime rib, fried spicy Brussels sprouts and skillet desserts share the menu with occasional overcooked or cold breakfast items and limp fries; portion sizes and bread quality have fluctuated. Prices lean above nearby breakfast spots but can be justified when the kitchen shines. The dim bar area adds intimacy (the dining room can feel overly bright), and limited local alternatives make it a convenient stop for Sewanee visitors.

My wife and I took a little getaway from Nashville and stayed at the Swanee Inn, so we decided to dine there as well since the area doesn't have many dining options. We visited on a Thursday night and had no trouble securing a table. The service was excellent, and the food was enjoyable. The standout dishes for us were the fried spicy Brussels sprouts and the skillet dessert—they were fantastic! I ordered the hamburger, and my wife had the chicken; both were good, although not exceptional. We would definitely consider returning if we come back.
Prices are higher compared to other breakfast places in nearby Winchester, but the quality of food justifies the cost. The service is generally very good; however, we have encountered some issues over the past year. There have been instances where our breakfast stretched over 1.5 hours due to service delays—be it a large group being catered to, an employee not showing up, or insufficient staff to handle the restaurant's busyness. The servers work diligently and are quite capable; they can only do so much when there aren't enough of them on duty, which impacts the service. On occasion, the cook seems to rush things, resulting in cold toast or overcooked eggs. Additionally, I've noticed a change in portion sizes; the grits used to be served in generous amounts, but lately they have become smaller. The toast previously came from a bakery in Tracy City and was exceptional, but now it often resembles lower-quality bread, similar to Wonder Bread. There seems to have been one or more changes in restaurant management, which might have contributed to these fluctuations. Breakfast can be outstanding, but at times it may take a long while, and the food might arrive burnt or cold. It’s a bit like a lottery—sometimes you hit the jackpot, other times not so much. Generally, the experience is quite positive, and the servers’ good nature and hard work make this restaurant a reliable choice for breakfast.
We saw their post on Facebook and decided to give them a try. This was a very good decision. First was the wow factor at the entrance, and the atmosphere was very elegant and relaxing! We were promptly seated and our server, James took our drink order. After returning with our drinks he took our dinner order. The wait for our food was very minimal and gave us time to really enjoy each other's company. We both had the prime rib (med rare), squash casserole, herb roasted potatoes, tomatoes/cucumber salad and cobbler. The prime was cooked to perfection! Squash casserole was very good. Potatoes seasoned and not over cooked. Tomatoes/cucumbers was better than a garden salad. The cobbler was multi-berry and very tart but good. I will definitely be back!!!!
When our friend Tracy suggested a Sunday brunch at Eighteen58 at The Sewanee Inn in Sewanee, Tennessee, we were thrilled. Tracy has a talent for discovering new experiences and unique places, so I knew this was an outing I couldn't pass up.
During our stay at the inn, we reluctantly got out of bed to fuel up for our Saturday hiking adventure. My husband opted for the buffet and came back with overflowing plates of sausage, biscuits, and gravy. I chose the Cumberland Skillet. To clarify, I've never ordered a skillet before, so I had no idea what to expect. I was genuinely impressed by how tasty it was! The combination of hot potatoes, red peppers, and runny egg yolks was delightful. The price was reasonably moderate, around $25 for both of us. The service was also quite good.
