Mixiotes is shredded stewed meat in an unspicy chile-enhanced sauce. The flavor is quite light, bland even, and that’s okay because you can dress your tacos as you wish with avocado, green or red salsas, pickled onions, sliced radish and cucumber. The workers at this open air stand will ask if you want consome, make sure you say yes to a cupful of light beef broth with rice, chickpeas, chopped cilantro and onion. It’s refreshing to sip between bites of taco. Maybe get an agua fresca; I chose tamarind flavor. Find a place to sit in the nearby park and enjoy your meaty alfresco repast. When you’re done, return to the stand and ask them how much you owe. In my case today, 85 pesos or $5.
