Valters is HANDS DOWN the best Italian in the state. The service, the atmosphere, and the exceptionally fresh food. The lasagna is the best I have ever had! Times 10. View all feedback.
What Hank Altenwerth doesn't like about Osteria Valter:
Our son is a student at The U and loves Italian food, so we go here when we visit. We went the night before a Thanksgiving and were not disappointed. Everything was delicious and the service was outstanding! We even spoke to a alter a couple of times. My daughter and son-in-law are going to Italy in the spring. Vaulter gave them the address for his restaurant near Florence and even told her to call him before he goes... View all feedback.
If your looking for excellent Italian food, this is not your place. If your looking for a theatrical presentation of your food coupled with a an engaging host, then you might enjoy Valter's Osteria, as it appears many people in Salt Lake do. We dined there on a Friday night and the place was packed. The menu is very Italian, right down to the name of every dish. But the taste and quality was disappointing. The owner, Valter, was everywhere, greeting, hugging, and kissing everyone. He makes each and every diner feel like a guest in his home. He really provides hospitality. All food is finish prepped at the table on rolling cloth draped carts. Again it's part of the theater. Our Caesar Salad for Two lacked the traditional citric acid (lemon juice) we were expecting. My wife's risotto was bland and her grilled scallops undercooked. My pasta carbonara was far too saucy and lacked the sharp taste you expect from parmesan reggiano and pancetta. So overall it was just an average meal at a high price. We still enjoyed ourselves because it was good theater.

Lively and energized Italian restaurant where Valter, the owner welcomes everyone. All guests are treated to Bruschetta and amazing bread with garlic oil olive for a starter. The menu has many appetizers like eggplant and mozzarella and salads. All of the pastas are served from their preparation skillets just like in Italy. I had the "Tutte Pasta De Valter" which was a combination of "gnocchi arribiata ". and butternut squash and creamed spinach raviolis The ravioli were excellent. Naturally you are too full for desert but you are served some amazing drinking chocolate with a biscotti. While dinner is expensive you will feel like you were treated to an Italian Feast.
