We booked for lunch outside at 2pm and turned up on time. So did lots of other guests. No sign of anyone to greet us. Finally a stressed man rushes past. “Wait at reception!” That’s where we were, and it’s still unmanned. More guests arrive, but the stressed man (who we now assume to be the owner/ manager/ fall guy) is too busy shouting at his staff in Swiss-German something along the lines of “Why did you take reservations?” Basically he doesn’t have any tables. Or diplomacy. Eventually after half an hour standing around avoiding rushing waiters we settle for a table inside, a shame as it’s a sunny day and inside is almost empty. Drinks are eventually ordered, then food, but neither arrive. “Sorry, our mistake, have five minutes patience” they say, but still nothing. We’re nice to him as he’s clearly in meltdown mode. Other diners complain about their missing tables and he simply tells them he doesn’t care. No sugar coating. When the food arrives it’s fine, and the fondue is delicious. By this stage it’s past 3.30pm and the lift down (CHF.25 each, return) closes at 4.30pm, so we eat quickly as nobody wants to walk down the mountain. Even the most patient of our group conceded that this was shambolic. Book at your peril.
