Its cozy atmosphere, enhanced by a roaring fire, makes it a welcoming spot, despite some staff being occasionally less than cheerful. The extensive beer garden offers ample outdoor seating, perfect for sunny afternoons. However, the lack of food service is a notable downside—the pub could greatly benefit from offering meals. Despite this, visitors rave about the friendly staff and charming decor, making The Sun a must-visit destination in Pickering for beer lovers.
We stopped by on our way back to the campsite for a drink. The staff were incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was very welcoming to dogs. We enjoyed a delicious pint in a cozy and warm pub. We especially liked the unique touch of beer mats on the ceiling. We will definitely be coming back.
We enjoyed the great selection of real ales at this pub, which changed daily. The staff were accommodating and found us a table in the main bar due to a band playing in the side room, as we had our two dogs with us and it was too loud for them. The pub has a traditional style with books, games, a wood burning fire, and real ale pump handles decorating the ceiling. There was something of interest everywhere you looked, and we ended up returning several times during our week-long holiday.
"We had a great experience at this charming and friendly pub. The bartender, known as Scottish Sam, was very welcoming and the beer was excellent. Although we visited on a quiet Monday night, we could tell it's likely bustling on weekends. Overall, we would recommend this place, but note that they do not serve food."
I was visiting Pickering and popped in on a Wednesday night while walking the dog. The Sun was pretty quiet, but this was the right atmosphere to enjoy a quick pint. It had a good selection of beers, and I liked the decor. I would be extremely happy if this was my local. I tried the other drinking pubs in Pickering (not the two posh food ones! and this was my favourite; refunded if you like good conversation and ales.
A nice enough pub with limited space in the main bar area and more room in the added sun room. It does have an enormous beer garden which stretches into the distance, up a grassy hill. The interior seating isn't particularly comfortable but they do have decent beer. The biggest let down is that they don't do food and steps should be taken to rectify this, as they could make a killing, where they are situated on the edge of the town. We would have eaten there several times, had we been able to. I know you can bring your own food in but that's not the same as being able to order decent home cooked food.
