The Alternative Baker - Rosendale
The Alternative Baker
Description
Nestled in Rosendale, this beloved bakery-café is celebrated for masterful cakes—especially lemon and chocolate—fresh bread, sandwiches and wedding confections. The CIA-trained owner’s exuberant hospitality, reasonable prices and willingness to accommodate last-minute and dietary requests create warm, small‑town charm. However, several accounts report abusive, transphobic behavior by the proprietor, making the space unsafe for LGBTQ patrons; that serious warning contrasts sharply with the culinary praise. Consider the outstanding pastries and bespoke cakes alongside these documented safety concerns when visiting.

The baked goods are incredibly tasty! The owner is exceptionally friendly too. A visit to Rosendale wouldn't be complete without stopping at this spot.
My previous review seems to have either not posted or been deleted. I am a trans woman and have known Essel for many years, always supporting his business. Recently, I returned for the first time since transitioning. During my visit, I was inappropriately asked about my surgical status and questioned as to why I dislike my former name. I learned that there was a trans man who had previously experienced disrespect regarding his pronouns and name, and I was told it was unreasonable for me to expect the same respect. This line of questioning was deeply offensive, and after such a disturbing interaction, I chose to leave without being served. Things escalated further when Essel cursed at me, called me a derogatory name, and shouted while chasing me out of the store. I had to run to my car to escape. It was a truly awful experience. If you doubt my account, you can check out the reviews. I strongly urge anyone in the LGBTQ+ community to be very cautious about entering this establishment.
This restaurant is a beloved fixture in Rosendale, and I highly recommend it to anyone who visits the area. You must try their egg and cheese sandwich—it's genuinely the best you'll ever taste! You won’t be disappointed.
The food was quite good, and the cakes are fantastic! However, it’s disappointing that the staff verbally confronts customers if they think someone is different. The owner is openly and loudly transphobic, making it an unsafe environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.
We came in not for baked goods but for drinks as we were thirsty on our walk into town. Quick interaction but the baker was more than friendly; He welcomed us to sit even though we didn't purchase food. We appreciated the good vibes and it made us want to come back to the quaint little town of Rosedale soon.
