Red Caboose - RONKS
Red Caboose
Description
Perched amid Amish farmland, this caboose motel turns rail nostalgia into a family-friendly getaway. Private, narrow caboose rooms and farmhouse suites are clean with convenient parking; kids love the petting zoo, buggy rides and frequent steam-engine sightings. Friendly, attentive staff, an on-site restaurant and gift shop complement easy access to nearby museums and attractions. Expect compact layouts, small bathrooms and occasional maintenance or AC issues — ideal for couples, small families and railfans seeking a memorable, quirky stay rather than spacious luxury.

My four-year old grandson loves trains and we took a chance on the Red Caboose Motel. We stayed in Alaska 9, and before we left, my grandson asked if we could come back. It is a tight squeeze. We were 3 adults and two children, but the room was clean and it was hot as blazes out, but the air conditioners kept us comfortable. The bathroom is tiny and the little ones had to shower, but that worked out as well. We loved seeing the piglets at the petting zoo. We didn’t enjoy the dinner at Casey Jones. Our waitress was wonderful, but we would not return there to eat. We found The Speckled Hen which is a gem, complete with a lovely playground. I would also recommend Spring House Tavern for dinner and Down on the Farm Creamery for reasonably-priced and delicious homemade ice cream. You can walk to the National Train Museum from the hotel. We went to Cherry Crest Adventure Farm which is also close to the Caboose Motel. It was definitely pricey. Tickets are $23 each but you could easily spend hours and hours there because there are so many activities. It is very well done and each activity relates to farming and agriculture. It’s a great place for kids with everything from trampolines to tractors that kids can climb on. We would not hesitate to return to the Caboose Motel. It’s a great location for family activities.
It was a great area for the rooms. Privacy and quiet area. Petting zoo available for the kids adults entertainment.Rooms: BeautifulNearby activities: Petting zooFood drinks: Dinner on the grounds
My family and I had a wonderful experience at this place. The staff, especially Christine, were incredibly kind. We stayed in a train car, which had a charming rustic vibe that reminded me of summer camp. Unfortunately, my 3-year-old fell ill, and we had to leave quickly, but my husband accidentally left his laptop behind. They were quick to contact us and shipped it back right away! We can't wait to return. The petting zoo is fantastic, and the grounds are beautiful.
Staying in a caboose as your hotel room is an exceptionally unique experience. It's very clean and comes with all the essentials you need. You can park right in front of your caboose. The property has a lovely farmhouse feel, and the on-site restaurant is fantastic.
This was an extremely disappointing experience. Our original reservation was for the mail car which was described as 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms which was perfect since i was traveling with my wife, daughter and granddaughter. Upon check in the woman at the front desk was so quick to get things done that she ran my credit card for the balance and then asked if i wanted it on that card, which i did not. So now I have to wait 5-7 business days for my money back. I was then told that the train car was actually a bedroom and a living room which had a murphy bed. But after checking in, we needed to be moved because they informed us that the AC was not working. We were given a new train car that had 2 beds and 2 bunk bed with 1 bathroom. This room was terrible! It smelled like urine, had a mattress on the lower bunk that was to small, and a bathroom door that didnt close or even lock. When we informed the front desk we were told that the door doesnt lock for the safety of children, even thought you can unlock it from the outside in case of an emergency. When i spoke with the owner, i was told that her husband would personally fit the issue which NEVER happened. It was an all around terrible experience and i would never return nor recommend this place.Rooms: Terrible. Not as described. Old and unmaintained. Smells.
