Nestled in a charming setting, Java Jacks offers a diverse menu that appeals to both health-conscious diners and those seeking comfort food. Highlights include delicious cod dishes and the acclaimed carrot-lentil soup. While many patrons rave about the flavorful entrees and exceptional coffee, some express disappointment with certain lunch options, finding them pre-packaged and overpriced. The service, although friendly, varies, particularly during peak times. Overall, Java Jacks boasts a cozy atmosphere and intriguing offerings, making it a worthwhile stop for dinner, despite occasional hiccups in lunch service and certain dishes lacking in flavor.
I visited this restaurant twice in July 2018 while on vacation. The first visit was enjoyable as I had a almond milk latte that was good. However, the second visit for lunch was disappointing. The only option available was a pre-made hummus wrap that was small, expensive, and served with carrot sticks and a non-vegan curry dip (despite me saying I didn't need it). I have heard better reviews about the dinner menu, but I did not have the opportunity to try it.
This is the only restaurant where I mentioned tofu. it is a Tofu/Mushroom option. it was quite good, sharp tomato sauce. and served with salat. this restaurant also has a casual coffee place, which is open for lunch, where you can get vegetarian packings, sandwiches and salads to stay or to wander.
My friends and I went to this restaurant for lunch. The staff were extremely accommodating and all the vegan options were clearly marked on the menu. I decided to order the Almond Orange Salad and the Seasonal Fruit Crisp, both of which were delicious but not very filling. I suggest that JJ's consider adding tofu or tempeh to their menu to make their vegan options more satisfying. However, a pro tip for those who need more food - there is a fry truck located across the street where you can grab a snack afterwards.
We dined at this restaurant twice for dinner and once for coffee and sandwiches. Each time was exceptional. I ordered the lobster linguini for dinner, which was fresh, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. The cod was also mouthwatering. My dining companion enjoyed the rabbit in puff pastry. For dessert, we had the fruit crisp and vegan pavlova, which were both delightful surprises. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would happily dine here again.
Food is over rated. Not sure what everyone else is raving about. Service: I 'm sure someone else will have a different service experience but we had a different waiter touch our table twice (after a long period of waiting or with clean plates) before our actual waiter touch our table a second time after seating. Not great. Food: We ordered cod tongues, mussels, cod main and rabbit en croute. The rabbit was our favourite. It 's basically a chicken pot pie but with pulled rabbit. It is definitely delicious. The cod large plate was listed as black bean crusted but was clearly only crusted with breadcrumbs. It came with confit tomatoes. Which were quite cold, typically anywhere else these are served to atleast room temperature. The fish was cooked fine, but didn 't feel special for the price. It was placed on a bed of mashed potatoes which were bland. Felt unseasoned, if it was supposed to be plain then it 's a huge disappointment for $35.50, you can atleast toss in some garlic or parsley, or any herb. Both large plates came with these vegetables that did nothing for the plate. There were these very sad, steamed veggies that detracted from the meal. Bland, felt previously frozen, definitely unseasoned and was barely warm. Honestly felt like someone reheated those precut frozen mix veggies in a bag. Cod tongues were a strange attempt of elevated cooking (see pics). They had clearly trimmed the fat off, but this leaves the tongue relatively 1 dimensional and lacking it 's signature soft chew texture in contrast to the flesh portion. The crust was too salty and the sauce didn 't do much for it either. At $17 you get 6 tongues. In St. John 's and Petty harbor (of the four other) restaurants you 'd get much more for less. Disappointing. Mussels were okay. These apparently change everyday so your mileage may vary. Although if you 're reading this, I 'd hope you 've decided otherwise. Our mussels were cooked with a herb and spiced butter sauce. Very salty, cook was fine. Anyway, spent about $120. Left hungry for ice cream we got across the street.
