I stumbled upon this charming cafe while leaving Secret Trees, as it's conveniently located right next door. It’s a perfect spot for a quick lunch at an affordable price of just $10. While the vegetarian options are somewhat limited, I chose the vegetable fried rice, which satisfied my hunger since I was in a rush. Plus, they offer free WiFi, which is a nice added bonus!
However, the second dish we ordered was supposed to be Mantis prawns (I can’t recall the full name on the menu). When you order Mantis prawns, you naturally expect to get Mantis prawns, but instead, we received vannamei prawns. This was a huge disappointment. My friend looked at the Chinese version of the menu and noted that it simply listed "prawns," with no mention of Mantis prawns. So, it was extremely misleading. We didn’t mention it to the staff since we didn’t feel like dealing with it.
After a few false starts—first, one of our favorite spots, Nom Nom Café in Salisbury, has been replaced by a Chinese restaurant called Phoenix House, which is only open for dinner, and second, Shanghai Cuisine in Robertson Village appears to have new ownership with a menu that lacks appeal—we ended up at Red Claw (named presumably after the quirky red lobster character on the sign and dishes). My partner and I decided to try two of their lunch specials: fish in chili sauce with rice and beef with stir-fried noodles. The fish arrived first, followed by the rice, and then the beef and noodles. I was genuinely impressed by the generous portions for just $11.80 each! The food was freshly cooked and served hot. The fish was well-prepared, boasting a wonderfully tender texture, and the overall flavor was decent—although the peppercorns might not be to everyone’s liking, I personally didn’t mind them. The beef stir-fried noodles were somewhat saucy with a nice texture, though not very flavorful; it had just enough salt for my preference (I tend to enjoy a bit more salt than most). Some chili oil, which I requested, added a nice kick to the noodles. All in all, it was a substantial meal with freshly prepared dishes totaling just $23.60, making it a fantastic value for the price. While the flavors may not be exceptional, it’s a satisfying option for a good, inexpensive meal. The service was adequate, matching the typical Sunnybank standard.
Since they changed to the new menu, it's getting a lot worse than before, as they have removed lots of good dishes : However, the green bean and chilli chicken are still the best dishes! Love them. The service there has always been TERRIBLE! It's like there is no waitress there to serve us, we have to always grab water, plates, bowls ourselves.
We didn't have any strong impression of On the Silk Road. Maybe that's my mistake for not ordering some cray fish but honestly, it was a confusing experience and when you leave a restaurant unsure of what its focus even is, there's something that can be improved in the layout, marketing and layout design.
