I had an incredible experience at this restaurant! It was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and I couldn't believe what I had been missing out on all these years. The service, food, and atmosphere were all so inviting and cozy. View all feedback.
What User doesn't like about Zagol Ethiopian:
I ordered the beef Key wat for $12 and a beer for a total of $21 !? It's good but well not worth this outrageous price for something so small ... All bread and no meat.. lost me View all feedback.
Bold colors, artistic tapisseries, masks, hand-woven pieces and baskets, various images that are unknown to people and places, and the sounds and visuals of traditional music and festive, energetic videos in the background all add the decor and feel to visit the chefs at home prepared for a meal only for you. From the kitchen near the aromas and sounds are welcoming and intoxicating, this increase of the anticipation of your meals arrival. When it does, time-tested and honored ingredients and spices melt together to create magic. Simple but complex at the same time. Where else can you eat any ivory mortar with your original Utensil, like all our ancestors, then eat the dish the meal sits on? If you had this special kitchen from Africa, do not hesitate to dig right in, literally. The meat and vegetarian prayers allow you to taste different dishes if you decide on a certain selection; don't try any more, the spiced tea as well.
Kicking myself for not checking out this place sooner. It's now listed with my favorite restaurants in Reno. The food is delicious, and just the right portion. I look forward to trying everything on the menu. I'd also like to some day check out the coffee ceremony. The honey wine is amazing: I don't like many sweet wines but this was fantastic (it's not overly sweet). The service was exceptionally friendly and sweet. I look forward to getting to know them better. PS These collards are better than most I've had in the South, and I thought nobody could do collards better than the South. PSS My fiancé isn't a huge fan of lamb, but she tried this and said she'll definitely start eating it more if it tastes this good.
The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff, but it served the worst Ethiopian food I have ever tried and it was also the most expensive. The menu combinations were lacking in quality. I have dined at many Ethiopian restaurants across various cities, including Seattle, Miami, NYC, and San Diego. In the cities of Berkeley and Oakland where I often visit, there are at least 15 Ethiopian restaurants. The lack of competition in Reno may be a contributing factor to the subpar food quality. A vegetarian combination plate at a pricey California restaurant costs $15-17, whereas at Zagol it was $30. Additionally, two out of the three vegetable elements were overcooked to the consistency of baby food. The meat combination was priced at $50, which would typically be $16-22 in California. Although the Injera and presentation were decent, the overall dining experience left much to be desired. Despite my reluctance to provide a negative review, it is warranted. When I arrived at 6:30 on a Friday and observed only one other patron dining, I should have trusted my initial instincts.
Unfortunately, this restaurant is closed for the week due to the chef's illness. We wish him a speedy recovery. This establishment serves delicious food!
As a new customer, I was curious about the menu at the restaurant. When I inquired about whether they served fufu, the waitress reacted strongly, seeming upset that I was asking for it for the first time. I felt embarrassed by her response.
