Allied Arms
Description
Nestled in the heart of Reading, The Allied Arms is regarded as a quintessential pub, celebrated for its historic charm and cozy atmosphere. Patrons enjoy a fine selection of local ales and an inviting garden space, perfect for sunny days. However, the pub has faced criticism over its cashless policy, limited seating options, and mixed service experiences, revealing a disconnect in customer satisfaction. While some commend the friendly staff and welcoming ambiance, others express disappointment at unfavorable treatment, particularly towards families. Despite its potential, the establishment appears at a crossroads, balancing its rich heritage with evolving customer needs.

We had a disappointing experience at The Allied Arms and will not be returning. Despite the charming ambiance of the pub, we were disappointed with the service from the bar staff, particularly a young waitress who seemed cold and uninterested in serving us. We were told to leave at 11:15, even though we had been served after last orders were called at 11. The high prices of drinks added to our shock at being treated so poorly. When we asked for plastics to take our drinks outside, we were rudely told there were none and then pressured to leave immediately. The manager's behavior was cold and borderline aggressive, culminating in the deliberate opening of a door to force us out into the cold. As experienced hospitality workers ourselves, we have never encountered such unnecessary and cruel treatment. We urge the owner to reconsider the staff representing the pub, as this kind of behavior is damaging to the business and its reputation.
We made the error of bringing our fourteen-year-old to this restaurant right before 6pm on a peaceful Sunday evening. We were served drinks (which we paid for) at four minutes to six, only to be promptly asked to leave at 6pm because we had a minor with us. The behavior was completely unacceptable. This establishment has been a favorite of ours for years, but not anymore.
I really enjoy this pub, although it can be a bit expensive. The atmosphere is fantastic, with a great variety of beers to choose from. There is also a spacious garden out the back. It is conveniently located in the center of town.
Pub is OK. Problem is its card only. For those who prefer to pay cash this is unnecessary Don't they realise covid is over! Won't be back
Patron was being transphobic. Staff saw no issue, said words are just words. I insulted staff and then they stated they said they were filing an incident for me being rude. Apparently, transphobia is not a problem for them. Largely patrons are middle-aged men with right-wing views and are bigoted. Staff see no issue with it. Avoid at all costs if you're a decent human.
