Nono's by Classic Confections

The Oriental Shrimp salad is superb - it's also good for 3 people. Their Nono's Homestyle Fried Chicken is amazing. And, then, we had the Parmesan Crusted Sole with Tomato & Basil Spaghettini. That last dish was a disappointment - under-salted and bland. We should've had a cheesecake, instead.

Went here to share a piece of blueberry cheesecake. The cheesecake is very good, but the topping flavor could've been stronger. Pretty small portion for its price.

It was a lazy weekday afternoon and as we walked the Princess was busy stuffing her face with pastry. While she was eyeing the Pokemon stuffed toys (and I was rolling my eyes upon sight of the price tag), my curiosity was immediately drawn to the opposite side. It was the color scheme of the place, alright, alright, the cake display that caught my attention, specifically, the baby pink frosted Strawberry Shortcake. But the welcoming hue of pastel blue walls, wooden interiors, baby pink accents, were also nice to look at. Long story short, I did my best to convince her to have merienda at this new place and it was really not that difficult. We ordered the Fried Truffle Cheese Wontons because any item on the menu with the word truffle immediately gets my attention. I always thought strangely that the aroma of truffle has that certain smell, though faint but recognizable, of gasoline. When this starter was brought to the table, the small, cheese filled wontons were nicely presented in a marble like slab, drizzled with sticky honey and candied walnut bits. Sticky, crunchy, sweet and salty with a whiff of petroleum. What's not to love. The Princess wanted a pasta dish and was taking so long to make up her mind. Finally, she chose the Classic Bolognese. It was good, but nothing distinguished it from the other pasta with meat sauce that we've had. And the serving size was for one, but that could be subjective. And I thought it was a little pricey. Of course we had to try a piece of the cake that started it all, the Nono's Chocolate Oblivion. Hands down, one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever come across. It tasted as good as it looked. But even better with a cup of coffee that came with a cute sugar cookie. The slice can easily be shared by two, but for a sweet tooth it could just be for one. The Princess and I loved that it was moist, rich but not too sweet, welcomingly bitter with that generous dusting of cocoa powder. And we were both just crazy about the crunch from the walnut praline in between layers that also adorned the side of the cake. Of course, I being the mother, happily let her have most of it. It was a good first visit, it was still their soft opening so it was understandable that there would be an issue or two, like I had to ask for two glasses of water rather than it being brought before food was served. And the loo was not working. Service was very friendly, though. They ask for your name so they could address you properly and I found that touch appealing. That first visit was concluded by a take out of a bag of colorfully iced sugar cookies that were on sale that day. Weeks after, we returned with hubby to try the other dishes. He ordered the Grilled Pork Chop while the Princess had the Nono's Homestyle Fried Chicken. Of the two, the latter won in terms of presentation. But both were filling, though, again, a tad pricey. The chop was an inch, more or less, thick with hardly any fat. Which is both a good and a bad thing. Good if you have to watch your cholesterol but bad, well not really bad but just at a disadvantage, because fat is flavor. The meat is still tender but it's on the brink of being dry. But I did like the smoky flavor from the very small piece I was able to have. The chicken dish came with a dinner roll, corn, fries, honey and gravy that was arranged on a rectangular wood that could be repurposed as a chopping board. The server was kind enough to offer a suggestion on how best to enjoy the chicken with the honey and gravy and the Princess was happy enough to try. The novelty of dipping the chicken meat in honey and gravy easily wore off. She will always be the just gravy person. Taste wise, it's a well seasoned fried chicken, very crispy fried chicken presented differently, a welcome change. I was not feeling very well so it was a toss up between two breakfast items. Sadly, I should have chosen the Eggs Benedict rather than the Vegetarian Omelette. I liked the sourdough bread slices, the strawberry preserve and butter that came with it. But the omelette itself is quite generic, nothing really to write home about. Aside from the chocolate cake, we tried a slice of the Dulce de Leche (or was it? basta it's the white frosted one) cake. With the same price, I suggest you go with the chocolate one because the other cakes seem to fall short, way short. And forgettable, like in this case. As for the drinks, try the grape smoothie. That second visit went smoother than the first. Oh, and the cute loo was now in service. Even if I found some of the items quite expensive for the serving size, I would still like to return to Nono's with my family or good friends. It's a very homey, welcoming place and nothing feels rushed that you could take your time to enjoy the food, the company, the ambiance. The music selection could use some help, but overall...I love the place. And the service is very good, smiling people all around. Plus points for the lighting. Makes for good food shots and selfies, particularly if your phone camera is pixel challenged and doesn't work that well without much natural light.

If it's fancy fried chicken you're after, then Nono's might just be the laid back, brunch date or afternoon delight place in the North. We tried their home style chicken sliders (good for 2!) and it was very tasty. I thought it would be like fastfood chicken, but it definitely wasn't. Also a must try would be the cheese wanton with truffle oil (next to the cookie skillet). One ain't enough!
