La Corona de Pancho Villa - Progreso

Right in downtown Progresso between the beach on the local food store. It is a short walk from the cruise shuttle drop off. Several local cold beers to choose from and a shot of tequila with each one. Frozen drinks available too and is food, but we didn't try either.

I can't believe this isn't higher up on the list. We had lunch here and loved it. I had a couple giant margaritas, we had shots of tequila (my only complaint being it was seriously bottom shelf tequila but the price was right) and a great time. I had the chicken flautas, my friend had a burrito. It was delicious food but the service was even better. We met the owner and he was very friendly and was joking around with us about their crappy tequila option, but all in good fun. The waiter was so friendly and since I had my baby with me we were small talking about children. He was nice enough to bring things I asked for, for her, like an extra knife to cut up her fruit, ice as she is teething and has a mesh feeder, etc. I much prefer this place to the other expat run places around Progreso. It's more authentic and a little hole in the wall but a great place to have drinks and food. One HUGE tip to remember: Get the menu in pesos. Their "cruise ship menu" in dollars is 3 times the price that you will pay in pesos. For example my flautas were $6 on the menu in dollars but $2 on the peso menu ($40 MXP).

We tried this little restaurant one afternoon recently and were very pleasantly surprised. The service we got from our waiter, Juan Carlos, was top notch. We ordered the pastore tacos and found them to be delicious and the serving size was larger than we expected. We sat at a table out on the sidewalk, so did not use the restrooms or see much of the interior of this place, but based on the cleanliness of our table and watching another employee move around the restaurant cleaning tables and wiping down the bar, we are sure this place is cleaner than a lot of establishments in Mexico. The prices were very reasonable as well. Give Pancho Villa's a try.

This place seems to specialize in fried whole fish. Other than that, save your pesos. Taco (shrimp and fish) were over salted and seemed to be frozen product. Fish fillet items off of he menu were mushy, overcooked and the portions were small. Same with the ceviche, mostly shrimp though it was supposed to be mixto. Either it was the cooks day off or he had given up trying. The young guys serving were enthusiastic but they were not gettting the support in the kitchen. We also went for dinner, but they were closed early in the evening.

I gave this review three stars. The food was authentic and very affordable. Raul was a great host. The corn tacos and taquitos were great. I now wish I had a few more! The only reason I did not rate this restaurant higher was the overwhelming presence of street vendors constantly bothering us at our table. We had a large sampler plate with four corn chicken and beef tortillas, another tortilla filled with cheese, and three taquitos. There were sides of sour cream and guacamole and pico de gallo. We also had two alcoholic drinks, and two virgin drinks for our kids plus two free shots of tequila. Cost - $21 USD.
