Access to the restaurant required following five steps. The chips were outstanding - most were a nice brown color, with a great taste and thick chunks. The chicken was cooked in the same oil as the chips, resulting in a crispy skin, a rare sight these days. However, the gravy was a letdown. It was disappointing to see so many undissolved lumps in the gravy, as I would have expected a professional chip shop to be able... View all feedback.
What MPound doesn't like about Merry Fryer:
There isn't a great deal that's merrie (merry) about this local fish chip shop. The food's OK from a greasy point of view, however the staff really set the scene with their unhappy attitude. I've actually seen merrier people at a funeral, and that's before the wake has started. Complaining that you're busy because it's the school holidays in front of customers is a real sure fire way to please the people who are payi... View all feedback.
I have visited this restaurant for the second year in a row and both times I ordered fish and chips. Unfortunately, on both occasions, I experienced gastrointestinal issues afterwards. The fish had bones in it and appeared to be overcooked, with the batter being hard around the edges. If you choose to dine here, make sure you are near a restroom.
My partner and I stopped by this restaurant as we were passing through. I ordered a chip butty with a battered sausage and gravy (disappointed by the Bisto gravy). I parked the car, dug in, and thoroughly enjoyed the chips and battered sausage. However, when I reached my favorite part (the butter and gravy-soaked roll), I discovered that it was moldy. Needless to say, I will not be returning to this place.
We enjoyed eating our F&C down by the river on a warm evening and the quality of the food was excellent. However, the Merrie Fryer wasn't particularly cheerful the evening we visited, but you can't have everything I guess?

Daylight robbery. Meant to be an adult portion. My 8 year old boy would finish all that and ask for more.
