We had lunch twice here. Beter than you would expect for a beach restaurant. Friendly service also helps it to make the whole lunch better (including Russian lessons :-) View all feedback.
What Gonçalo Coelho doesn't like about José Manuel Castanheira Herdeiros:
Terrible service. It took 45 minutes to fulfill a small order and in the end the wrong dish was brought. Food was OK, but too expensive for quality The distance between the tables does not follow the COVID safety guidelines View all feedback.

We went to this restaurant out of convenience on the first night (we were staying at the nearby Refugio da Praia, which was fantastic accommodation), and by choice on the second night! Although it doesn 't look like the most inviting of places from the outside,...do not be put off staff were welcoming and friendly, and the menu extensive. Although at first we were shocked to see some of the high prices, we now reckon the more expensive dishes must have been pretty special. Being on a budget, we picked some of the cheaper items, but they certainly did not disappoint. The food was fresh, very tasty, and plentiful. The wine was equally enjoyable and very good value for money. Between us we had the baked cod dish, the cod fishcakes, fried fish with tomato sauce and BBQ chicken. It was all absolutely great, and I would really recommend this restaurant to anyone staying in the local area and not just because it 's convenient and provides beautiful views of the Atlantic!
Excellent position and hearty meals but lacking in finesse. The couple of occasions we ate here were quite different one to another. The first time we had the fish and rice dish that came with generous proportions and cheerful service but we felt was rather expensive for a restaurant of this nature. The service was homely but lacked the sophistication needed to make the meal feel special; portions were adequate and my gluten free needs catered for.The second time the service was slow, the order not fulfilled, the homeliness was rather overwhelming, and the wait for the bill was totally unacceptable as we had to wait whilst our server finished a long personal call on her mobile phone. The toilet amenities were not clean and taps didn't work and the cooking staff were smoking in the entrance to the kitchen. My food was disappointing with the black pig ribs dry and over cooked. The salad was thrown together and the rice never came but instead unwanted chips. The potential of the position and the client base is great but not fulfilled.Pity about the continual TV too.

Definitely takes advantage of the location of the fort and is above average prices. The food is tasty, however.
