Local friends brought us here for dinner. My husband and I shared a large, delicious bowl of cioppino packed with shrimp, clams, and scallops. It was served with some lovely, crusty herb bread. Additionally, we shared a fantastic side salad.
Not really a cafe, this is one of the more sophisticated restaurants in the area. Extensive wine list and very good food.
We used to adore Ajax Cafe; it always felt like a special treat. Unfortunately, today was different. The prices have increased, and the quality and flavor of the food we received were lacking. I ordered the sea bass special, while my husband chose the tofu steak. My sea bass was incredibly dry, making it feel like I was chewing on a rubber boot, and it was served atop undercooked beans. When I mentioned to the server that it was dry, she did not apologize but said she would inform the cook. My husband's tofu steak was mushy and devoid of flavor. For dessert, we ordered a peanut butter pie, but it turned out to be a mediocre cheesecake. The final bill came to over $90 (without drinks), which was a huge disappointment. After dining here more than a dozen times, we have decided not to return. What a shame!
We used to adore Ajax Cafe; it felt like a special treat every time we visited. Unfortunately, today's experience was quite different. The prices have increased, and the food we received was lacking in both flavor and quality. I ordered the sea bass special, and my husband opted for a tofu steak. My $36 sea bass was incredibly dry, reminiscent of chewing on a rubber boot, and it was served on a bed of undercooked beans. When I mentioned to our server that the fish was dry, she didn’t apologize but simply said she would inform the chef. My husband's tofu steak was mushy and flavorless. We also ordered a peanut butter pie, which turned out to be just an average cheesecake. For a meal totaling over $90, it was a complete disappointment. We had been here more than a dozen times in the past and always enjoyed it, but after tonight, we have no plans to return.
I had the vegan special for dinner with tofu. It was disappointing. The whole dish lacked any flavor. I did enjoy the sprigs of grilled asparagus. My friends had seafood dishes and did enjoy their meals. The chicken dish one said was just ok.
Ajax Cafe is a charming waterfront hideaway in Port Hadlock, WA, beloved for cozy, quirky ambiance, attentive service, live music and a well-stocked bar. Guests praise standout dishes—brisket, ribs and key lime pie—alongside generous portions and inviting outdoor seating. However, experiences are uneven: some entrées arrived dry or bland, takeout chowder was criticized for shells and grit, and prices feel steep. Overall it’s a memorable small-restaurant experience best for special evenings if you’re willing to accept occasional inconsistency.

This was our first visit back in years. The restaurant is very charming and eclectic, and cold. Unfortunately there was an issue with the heater so it was quite cold. The Caesar salad with smoked salmon was exceptional. The quiche was served cold on a plate with salad, so we sent it back to be warmed up. The vegetarian chili was delicious, but not served hot.Lunch service is new here, so hopefully they will work out the kinks as it's much needed in the area. Service was very friendly.
Great place to eat. Super cool that they are doing lunch! Check their website ?
Five of us enjoyed excellent lunches on a quiet Sunday. The server was apologetic for the ling waits for ordering, and the arrival of drinks, but we were there to enjoy ourselves and were pleased with the cocktails and our delicious meals. Don't plan on a quick meal as the staff are only just adjusting to the new lunchtime service and new ownership. Enjoy a glass of wine, a beer, one of the house special cocktails, or choose a mocktail and relax. The falafel bites are crispy delicious, the salads fresh and varied, the sandwiches are generous and on great bread. The olive oil lemon curd cake is absolutely worth a try.
This was my first time trying Ajax and I’ll definitely return. I really enjoy the atmosphere and it’s location being tucked away on a street with a working class feel. It’s away from the hustle of Port Townsend. It’s a place that makes you feel like you’ve found a gem in an unassuming place. So let’s call this review a 4.75. The food was good but didn’t totally hit for me. I do think it hit for my girlfriend tho and I tried her ahi tuna which was admittedly better than my dish. The salmon I had was cooked very well, texture/wise, and I think the flavor profile they’re going for made sense to my palate but something about it was slightly off that made the food just a 4 star for me. That said, the food was good enough for me to really want to go again. The restaurant is super interesting and I feel like I didn’t explore it enough. Same with the menu. Plus it’s such a beautiful drive to that area. Will return!
Funky little joint with great food. Been here many times over the years and it's always an experience.

We loved this lucky find! We didn?t have a reservation but they kindly fit us in at a table right next to the (excellent) musician. The whole experience was nothing short of exceptional the servers, the food, the ambiance. We will be coming back and I will be thinking about the incredible key lime pie.
Fantastic! Excellent service, atmosphere and food! Everything was absolutely delicious! This is a definite must try for all and I will be returning every time I am in town. Fresh inventive dishes make this place memorable.
We came to Ajax Cafe on a local’s recommendation and were definitely impressed. The clam chowder was the best I’ve ever tasted—truly unlike any other chowder out there. It’s an absolute must-try! They even serve it with a golden spoon, which is a charming detail. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and our waitress was exceptionally friendly!
I enjoyed a fantastic vegan dish while my friend savored the ribs. The food, atmosphere, and service are all top-notch! I will definitely be coming back. This might just become my new favorite spot.
I had a reservation for 7:00 PM, but we didn't get any bread until 7:30. Out of the four drinks we ordered, only three eventually arrived, while several tables seated after us were already served their meals. The waitress was unhelpful, just saying they were busy without showing any concern for the delay. I lost my appetite and decided not to order food. One dish we did try was almost inedible. I won't be coming back.

We went here as a recommendation by someone who grew up in the area and it did NOT disappoint. The clam chowder was the absolute best I’ve ever had, it’s unlike any other chowder out there. Seriously, it’s a must-try. They literally serve it to youwith a golden spoon too. It was a really lovely experience, and our waitress was so friendly too!
I had a wonderful vegan plate and my friend had ribs. The food, ambiance and service is top notch! I will definitely be back. This might be my new favorite place.
Went with friends, had a good time. Food and cocktails are good to very good, service is friendly and professional, vibe is mellow. The hats on the wall are for customers who want to borrow a hat while they eat, drink and be merry. Great quirkytouch!
Made reservations for 7:00 pm. At 7:30 finally managed to get a few slices of bread. Three out of four drinks ordered finally arrived. Several parties seated after us already got their food. The waitress is unapologetic, and tells us how busy they are.I've lost my apetite and decided to not eat anything. One of the meals was barely edible.I will not come here again.
I need more stars than just 5! This was my first time going to AJax to celebrate 2 birthdays. The food was absolutely amazing! We ordered the Brussel sprouts as an appetizer, YUM! I rarely order a steak out at dinner because my husband makes the beststeaks and I’m usually disappointed. I had the best steak at AJax (3 of us ordered steak). My husband had the ribs, he saidthat they were perfect with no fat on them. The others ordered the salmon dinner and the pork tenderloin, which they said wereboth very good. Our server, I think her name was Coleen, very friendly and attentive. We had a great night. I can’t wait tocelebrate my birthday dinner there in a few weeks! Oh, I almost forgot… that key lime pie. YOU HAVE TO ORDER IT! If you’retoo full, get it to go!
