Reviews summary
Scratch restaurant offers a unique dining experience with a mix of reviews. While some customers enjoyed the outstanding food and drinks, friendly service, and warm atmosphere, others found the service lacking and thought that the portion sizes were too small for the price. Despite the mixed feelings, many customers appreciated the innovative menu, fresh ingredients, and creative cocktails. Scratch remains a popular choice for both foodies and locals looking for a gem in the off-the-beaten-path neighborhood of Troy Hill. The restaurant's dedication to quality food and drinks in a casual setting at reasonable prices makes it a standout in the city.

Great food, nice ambience, really wonderful service. Will definitely come back.
I have mixed feelings about this place. Let me first start by saying the service was great and they made things right. Cocktails are pretty good as well, although pricey. That aside, I feel this establishment either needs to A) Knock down their prices for food and drinks about 30% or B) up the portion size and food quality. I frequent butterjoint, Sullivans, Butcher the Rye, Tambellinis, etc., which are all about the same price range and provide much more satisfaction. Several things missed the target at our table, and while I feel they were adequately remedied by our server, the issues take root in the kitchen and are not the servers responsibility. A 6 oz filet is not equivalent to two 2 oz pieces. All the potatoes at our table were cold, and proteins over cooked. There’s potential here, but something has to change to reach its full potential.

BRING BACK THE BAGELS??? idk why they rebranded, they used to have the best bagels in the city and now they just make mediocre overpriced “tavern” food. Bring back the bagels. The people want your bagels.
Outstanding. This place is perfect for any occasion from date night to family dinner. Highly recommend getting a reservation as they fill up quickly even on weekdays. Our waitstaff was knowledgable and kind as they provided a wonderful experience. Our kids enjoyed playing chess and reading their collection of Pittsburgh classics as we waiting for food. Each and every dish we ordered hit the mark. For example, my brother ordered the chefs design burger and they customised it to his liking perfectly! Me personally, I enjoyed their tomato and peach salad. On that note, they had a variety of vegetarian and vegan dishes that were perfect for our non-meat eaters. Their use of fresh and local ingredients came through. Hope to see this place again soon! Vegetarian options: They clearly labeled vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. They utilised fresh fruits and veggies which I greatly enjoyed. Dietary restrictions: Everything is customisable and made fresh no matter the need they got you covered. Along with the icons on the menu to guide you. Parking: It’s somewhat difficult to find parking but in the early evening we found free street parking a short walk away. Kid-friendliness: Perfect for kids. They have a kids menu and plenty of games to play as you wait for your food- on that note the food came quite quickly
My family of 12 ordered a lunch from there and it was a delight. Everyone that ate the chicken sandwich said it was the best they ever had. I recommend this place to everyone because of how easy they made ordering for all of us. Vegetarian options: They made almost everything on our table accessible to the vegetarians. They put things on the side so they can indulge as well.

The place was nice the waitress was a little pushy and seemed to be in a hurry however they weren't busy, we both got salads that were not chilled they were warm with too much dressing.I got the salad with strawberries, it wasn't good and had a bitter aftertaste. My girlfriend had the other salad same thing it was warm with too much dressing and too much garlic. Possibly someone new working in the kitchen? However for the cost The food should have been done correctly.
First time there we had a perfect family brunch experience. Shout out to Holly for being awesome. Since going back, we have been more impressed each time. Everything on the menu is excellent. Fine dining level food with neighborhood comfort and affordability. One of the best lattes in the city too!
Very tasty, cute restaurant. Foccacia and pickled parsnips were good. Deluca steak was tasty, as was the meatloaf.

I recently went to a Sunday brunch at this restaurant. I enjoyed the live jazz band, although it was a bit too loud at times, making it difficult to carry on a conversation with others. The service was mediocre - I wish the servers had been more attentive to our table. The food was tasty, but considering the price, I found the portion sizes to be on the smaller side.
Scratch continues to be a way for comfort food. Eclectic interior is not super cozy and worked better before-COVID. Felt safe and able to remove from other diners. The service was excellent this time.
I have mixed feelings about this place. Let me first say that the service was great and it did things right. Cocktails are also quite good, although expensive. Apart from that I think that this facility either needs A) to increase its food and beverage prices by about 30% or B) the size and quality of the food. I frequent butterjoint, Sullivans, Butcher the Rye, Tambellinis, etc., all over the same price range and offer much more satisfaction. Several things missed the goal at our table, and while I feel that they have been appropriately fixed by our server, take the problems root in the kitchen and are not the server responsibility. A 6 ounce fillet does not equal two 2 ounces. All potatoes at our table were cold and proteins over boiled. There is potential here, but something has to change to reach its full potential.

Scratch is my go-to bar on Troy hill. The current food and beer selection is their best yet (though I do miss the amazing Sunday brunch). They keep a great balance of contrasting themselves from the Troy hill dives with an impeccably designed interior, and warm, friendly atmosphere, while still providing reasonably priced drinks and a local neighborhood feel. I can't speak to the main menu, as I generally go here for drinks, but everything that I have seen looks too notch. The meals are a little on the pricey side, but not at all overpriced for what you get. They have a separate bar menu, which offers some creative twists on conventional bar food, and you get generous portions for a great price. I've personally tried the pork belly sandwich and hot dog, and both were phenomenal. The service here is great, and the staff has always been friendly and attentive in the year that I've been visiting regularly. I tend to be a creature of habit with my drink choices, but they offer a number of great beers, and the cocktails are on point. One thing that I think is awesome about the beer and liquor selection is that Scratch offers a ton of local options, and often has specialty beers and drinks that benefit various causes and charities. In conclusion! I highly recommend this little gem in the off the beaten path neighborhood of Troy hill!
Outstanding experience. Scratch manages to be both very serious about food and casual enough that everyone feels welcome, even in jeans, or even on a weeknight. Also: outrageously affordable for the quality, which is becoming rare in this city. My date and I enjoyed the beef asada tacos, and plates of blistered shishito peppers and the crisped brussels sprouts. The beef was perfect, integrating light fatty pockets with crispy meat, peppers were nicely blackened, and brussels sprouts mind-blowing: perfectly crisped and drizzled in a sweet/sour sauce and served with a mild, mousse-like cheese. We both enjoyed our unique drinks, appreciated the fine service (it seemed like our server was still catching up with the bar staff), the warm dining room, which was never noisy despite being a full house. Don, the owner, stopped by to check on our table personally, a nice gesture that reinforced the friendly neighborhood atmosphere.
Went to Scratch Food and Beverage last night in Troy Hill. I lived in Troy Hill for a few years and at that time it was Billy's. The place has since been remodeled and is really cool inside. The food is excellent and creative. Really fresh. They also have good wine, beer and cocktails. Loved the small plates. Service was very good. You don't feel rushed and the owner even checked in often. Will definitely go back and soon! My new fave.
I had an incredible experience at this restaurant. The appetizers were outstanding, especially the pork belly. My family and I went for a special dinner and I was truly impressed by the drink selection and menu options. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive. I highly recommend visiting this establishment. Thank you Scratch for making my trip memorable.
This restaurant serves incredible, satisfying comfort food that is expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The cocktails can be customized to your liking without straying too far from the original recipe, and the end result is absolutely delicious. The owner personally guided us through the menu during our visit, and his recommendations were spot on. We will definitely be returning for more and would recommend this restaurant to any food enthusiasts who can truly appreciate good cuisine. The ambiance of the decor enhances the overall dining experience. You won't be disappointed!
