Reviews summary

Nestled in Squirrel Hill, this cozy sushi spot tantalizes with fresh fish and an array of delightful rolls. Diners rave about the spicy California roll and the exceptional tuna/avocado combination. While some lunch specials may feel mass-produced, the chicken katsu curry bowl impresses with its authentic flavors. The casual ambiance, akin to a small takeout joint, complements its reasonable prices and attentive service. Although minor issues like warm water and decor simplicity arise, the quality of food, including standout dishes like the mango roll and crispy tempura, make it a perfect stop for both quick lunches and leisurely meals with friends and family.

Pork cutlet curry with scallops hand roll. Definitely recommend hand roll. Sushi rice is on point with the sourness. The cutlet might need more salt but the outside is crunchy. Curry taste good as well.

Just wanted to grab something quick before a movie that was across the street. Very sparce decorations, not alot of frills. Looks more like small takeout joint with just a couple of tables, but sometimes that indicates decent food. Got some green tea, which was just Celestial seasonings tea bags. Kinda wanted a pot of tea or at least for it to be hidden if using. Anyway, salmon poke bowl was huge and super fresh. Could absolutely split between two people and the price was right for what you get. Not a bad joint.

Diners 2+1 is my go-to spot for sushi! The fish is always fresh, the prices are reasonable, and the service is consistently excellent. They offer fantastic nigiri and easy rolls, with the quality of the fish being top-notch. The large rolls are also delicious and enjoyable!

We always return to Diners 2+1 because the experience is consistently wonderful from start to finish. We’ve never faced a wait for a table, and the restaurant is impeccably clean. The atmosphere is casual yet feels special. Our food arrives extremely quickly, and the waitstaff is courteous and attentive without being intrusive. Most importantly, the food is delicious—everything we’ve tried has been excellent. It’s hard to choose what to order because we want to explore the menu, but we also crave the incredible dishes we’ve already enjoyed. Given the quality, the prices are unbeatable. It truly feels like a hidden gem. Squirrel Hill has many amazing restaurants, but this is the one we keep coming back to.

This place is a hidden gem. The menu is pretty simple, but we ordered several things outside of our normal items. The cold noodles and pancakes are both not what they seem as well as masterfully tasty. I highly recommend them if you are into appetizers. Our entrees were delivered promptly and the staff was beyond courteous. Everything my wife and I received had an elevated flavor. It's not often that I say this, but the food might even be underpriced. The plating style, flavor profile, and uniqueness of everything screams expensive, but yet everything is incredibly affordable. Try it for yourself. You'll see what I mean. I know my wife and I will definitely be back.

The food was quite tasty. I would definitely come back to eat here. The three things that I didn't enjoy were that my water was warm, the rice was clumped together in the bowl, and there was no air conditioning.

The service was very polite and attentive once we ordered but was a little slow to start because they were very busy. But have patience because the food is great!!! Very casual setting that mostly serves students but it's worth the trip, the sushi chef is amazing and will come out and talk to you if you have questions. Try the mango shrimp sushi it is delicious and something you can't find anywhere else! they also have hot foods and mochi!

My favorite day-to-day sushi go to! The fish is always fresh, the prices are reasonable, and the service is always wonderful. They have both great nigiri and simple rolls (the fish quality is always top notch) and delicious big rolls too! Enjoy!

The food at this restaurant was decent, but it really depended on what you ordered. We opted for the lunch special, which included a salad, miso soup, and two sushi rolls for $11. We selected a spicy California roll (which was good), along with spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and tuna/avocado rolls. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls seemed to be mass-produced for lunch service and we weren't huge fans after just one bite. However, the spicy California roll was seasoned well and tasted better than a regular California roll. The tuna/avocado roll was the standout dish, with fresh tuna and avocado. We also tried the Japanese chicken katsu curry bowl, which was well-balanced and delicious, reminding me of my mother-in-law's Asian-style curry. Overall, the flavors were on point and the chicken was cooked perfectly. While it was a good spot for a quick lunch, it's not somewhere I would go out of my way to visit. If you're in Squirrel Hill, it's worth stopping by for some Japanese cuisine and enjoying a meal with friends and family.

Was suggested to go there by my friend I was meeting for dinner. Apparently they had recently changed the menu to be more sushi forward which was fine with me but not as much for my dining companion. The food was ok but nothing special. It did throw me a bit to have sushi with lettuce in it. I definitely prefer cucumber as the green to be in sushi. While it fine for dinner they are unfortunately situated in sq hill between many other Asian options that I’d prefer.

Lived on the West Coast for 10 years and have lived in Pittsburgh about 2 1/2 years. Was hard finding great sushi that was fresh and not bland until I stumbled across this restaurant. I have gone back a few times and love the the spicy cold noodles and various sushi options. Pricing is very reasonable too!

I got some sushi takeout and was surprised by how much I liked the specialty veg roll. I like that you can order online and pay when you get there. I don't love that you can't put in an order until they've opened. Being able to order in advance would be quite nice and have less disruption to your day. One note, I ordered first thing when they opened. The confirmation said it would be ready in 40 minutes, but they messaged it was ready after only 13 minutes. If you're planning based on the time they give you, just beware it may mean you have to change up your plans.

Stopped in for a quick bite to eat and it was very good. The spicy cold noodles were delicious and got spicier as I went. The sushi was all fresh and delicious. The spicy rolls were not that spicy but still good
