Captain D's has garnered a series of mixed reviews, reflecting a restaurant in transition. Patrons express disappointment over menu changes, with diminished portion sizes and a lack of transparency regarding ingredient substitutions. While some found the fried fish acceptable, its texture often fell short of the expected crispiness, and the new tartar sauce received less favorable mentions. Service quality appears erratic, with some visits marred by slow drive-thru times and less than enthusiastic staff. However, positive experiences with friendly service and tasty meals suggest there is potential for improvement. Overall, diners leave with a sense of ambivalence.
I hadn't visited a Captain D's in nearly a year and a half, so I was looking forward to this special trip. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The staff were friendly, but the food didn't quite meet my expectations. The fried fish was decent, but it lacked the crispiness I was hoping for. The batter just wasn't as crunchy as it should be. The tartar sauce came in a squeeze bottle, similar to ketchup, which was different from the small packets I remember. It tasted homemade and had a strongly onion flavor, which was a bit off-putting. Overall, the food was okay—not great enough to entice me to return, but certainly not terrible.
I had a terrible experience at this restaurant, and I've included a picture to back up my review, as I don’t want anyone to think I'm being unreasonable. It's hard to understand how the manager allows overcooked and reheated food to be served. The dishes I received were not fresh at all. I won't be coming back here; the food was disappointing and way too greasy.
I ordered the deluxe seafood platter, and I initially thought the long wait meant my meal was being prepared fresh. However, the fish was so tough that I couldn't eat it, and the crab was only lukewarm. On a positive note, the shrimp was good, and the hush puppies were excellent. Unfortunately, the employee dropped my credit card while handing it back to me, and it ended up landing in a puddle of ketchup on the floor. This is definitely not the Captain D's I remember. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant.
The service at Captain D's is usually good, but my last visit was disappointing. They told me the butterfly shrimp was unavailable and offered the bite-sized shrimp instead, which I was fine with initially since I just wanted shrimp. However, they charged me the price of the butterfly shrimp even though I received the smaller version. On top of that, they swapped my French fries for four hush puppies without mentioning that fries were also out of stock. It was frustrating that they only informed me about one item being unavailable but not the other. I often choose Captain D's when I'm craving their menu, but this experience with substitutions and incomplete information was frustrating. It would have been much better if they had been honest about both shortages upfront instead of me discovering the missing fries after I got home. That’s just not acceptable.
I hadn’t been to Captain D’s for about a year and a half, and my recent visit left me a bit disappointed. The staff were friendly, but the food fell short of what I expected. The fried fish was passable, though it seemed slightly undercooked and lacked the crispy batter I was hoping for. The tartar sauce, served from a squeeze bottle instead of the usual packets, had a strong onion taste that didn’t suit my palate. Overall, the meal was average—not bad, but not enough to draw me back soon.
