Nothing special nothing fancy. Good meal at a good price. The Cafe is reasonably located as a reasonable walk from several hotel/motels with reasonable paths.
Quiche and salad $14, quiche by itself,$8. That means the smallest amount of salad ever served was $6. Wow! The microwave didn't do any favours to the pastry crust, making it tough and dry. Sad to say, I watched the young girl handle ham and chicken, then pick apart red onion slices with her nails onto bread , crumble cheese on top all without gloves. Quick swipe of hands on the apron and onto handling fish cakes. Probably the convenience pulls in most of their customers, but there sure is room for improvement. Flat white coffee was so cool it was instantly drinkable.
We had two different family events and Colonial Cafe catered for both. It was the best decision. There were a number of different food requirements amongst the groups and Helen took it all into account. The food was delicious and not expensive. On the day we went to Colonial, loaded up with beautiful platters of food and then that night just put them out on the table; entrees, mains and desserts.(We reheated where needed) The food was modern, stylishly presented with attractive garnishing and plentiful. (very generous proportions) The wastage that I often have when I buy the ingredients and cook wasn't there. I'd do it again.
The café is delightful, with excellent food and warm service. I am impressed by their efforts to promote sustainability by offering discounts for bringing your own cups and using paper straws.
In the last few months, I have been to Colonial Cafe several times. Their chocolate milkshake is the best in Townsville. I usually also order an egg and lettuce roll on dark bread, which never disappoints. The staff are friendly and quick, although the only downside is that the restaurant is quite small. However, I have always managed to find a seat. An added bonus is that the tables have inspirational quotes on them. Overall, definitely worth a visit.
