What Carol Macedo doesn't like about El Asador:
A terrible owner who keeps employees on cash payment, and then gets away with not paying them in full. Will use dodgy excuses to get out of paying them. Don't support this kind of business! I suffered from it, along with other employees. Never again. View all feedback.
Her trading work is done with a level of expertise that can only be learned with years of experience at the highest levels. I was blown away by the ingenuity and thoroughness of strategy. Homemade Empanadas with Chimichurri, Churros Alfajores so fresh and so delicious! They were the perfect addition to a Christmas Eve feast. Thank you Emily Max! Fabulous family owned business homemade products!
Amazing empanadas I regret getting the small ones!! But the meat lovers platter was also great, topped off with perfectly cooked churros. Would absolutely go back (and order many more empanadas!
I live on the other end of Bulwer Street and pass by El Asador almost daily. It has been on my “must-try” list for the past two to three years, especially since it’s right next to the Frank Torre Quality Butcher, where I regularly buy my meats for home cooking. Last week, when some friends from out of town were craving steak, I thought it was the perfect time to finally try this place. We found a parking spot right across the street, which felt like a good omen to start with. Our server was friendly and pleasant when she took our order. We had already checked the menu online and were excited to order the $100 Parillada Completo, a platter that included beef and lamb ribs, rump steak, chicken wings, chorizo, morcilla, grilled flatbread, salad, and a choice of four empanaditas, meant to serve 2-3 people. However, we were disappointed to learn that they had changed the menu the day before and the platter was no longer available. No problem, we asked for a recommendation and ended up ordering the meat lovers, the special brisket of the day, a steak with chimichurri (suggested by the chef), and three empanadas to share. We requested our meat to be cooked medium rare, of course! The empanadas arrived first, and to be fair, they were quite good, especially with the delicious house sauce on the table. Then came the main attraction—the meats were served all at once. We dove in immediately, cutting, chewing, and adding more sauce, after taking our obligatory photo, of course. Then my friend remarked, “The meat’s a bit dry, huh?” Yes, it was. There was no denying it. Maybe the brisket would be nice and tender when pulled apart? Nope, that was it. How about the steak? It looked pink in the middle with some fat around the edges, but it was also dry. There was hardly any juice; we had to rely on the flavorful sauces to moisten the meat. Going through the meat lovers platter felt heartbreaking. If this was supposed to be a love story, it missed the mark. The beef ribs were dry, the lamb ribs were dry, and so was the steak. The chorizo was decent, and the chicken was tender at first, but even that turned dry upon chewing. When it was time to pay, I noticed the grill in the back—it looked like it was covered in soot, with two cold, dry pieces of meat resting in the corner. It almost resembled a fireplace! Reflecting on the experience now, I feel like it really should warrant a one-star review, but since the flavors of the sauces were decent—nothing life-changing, but not completely terrible—I’ll stick with my generous two-star rating. If you’re going to ask how we’d like our meat cooked, you really ought to make an effort to get it right. This experience reminded me more of a backyard BBQ where Uncle Jim got distracted by the football game and forgot about the grill. So, two stars it is.
We had a wonderful evening at El Asador. The empanadas were outstanding, and the chimichurri sauces, especially the spicy one, were delightful. I thoroughly enjoyed my sirloin (bife de chorizo) and the fresh cucumber cocktail. The staff was friendly and attentive without being intrusive, which allowed us to savor our dinner and conversation.
