Just an occasional visitor to Pembroke, but alway manage to make New Star my place to visit for Chinese food. Lots of parking. A charming and efficient owner. Location is very clean, and Corvid rules apply (if you won’t wear a mask and won’t present proof of vaccine, then don’t even bother. They check). The food is delicious at New Star but the atmosphere isn’t so great. I was a bit disappointed that with the Covid shut down, they wouldn’t have taken the opportunity to sink some money into revamping the interior. It’s dingy. School bus colour walls and chocolate brown trim is not inviting. Beautiful water views but you’re looking through old dirty windows that should be replaced. The staff are terrific. I will only... I shared a dine in Dinner for 4 here with motorcycle riding companions since the buffet was closed due to COVID. The service was prompt, courteous and the food very good. We will definitely return when next in the area.
I know we are in uncertain times and we like to support local restaurants as much as possible. The food here is amazing and you will not be hungry when you are done. That being said the waitress that we had certainly was not on the ball at all. Very slow was to busy chatting with the lady waiting on her order. We sat 5 minutes and we were the only table at lunch time and waited for our menus when I went to inquire she was a little snotty about me not wearing a mask once I left the table. Well people I was over 10 feet away from her and just asking a question. She finally came with menus then took our drink orders. When she brought our drinks she took our food orders and explained that the water bottles were complementary. The food was good but slow to come out and that is ok as it was a girls lunch and we were getting caught up. When all was said and done I went to pay the bill and stated that one was a senior (no discount for that she said yet there used to be) and I asked to check the bill as we did not receive everything that we ordered. I paid and left her a $3.00 tip which will pay for the 3rd pop that she forgot to charge us for so as far as I am concerned she lacked people skills for sure. Would I go back again ... I don't think it will be for a long time.
6 of us went in for evening buffet ..the food was cold for the most part and several dishes were empty customers had to ask to refill trays
This is one of our favourite Chinese restaurants. We have enjoyed several visits over this summer, with excellent food selection and all the service you really need for a buffet. The selection is quite good, with a bit of variation on the weekend. Their honey garlic spare ribs are a real treat. There is something for everybody in this selection.
