Many guests praise the friendly, attentive staff—especially employees like Josh, A.M., and Shanice—who elevate visits with excellent service and positive attitudes. When properly prepared, the food, including fish, shrimp, okra, and sides, is hot, fresh, and flavorful. When I opened the box, I was immediately put off by all the crumbs inside. I visited the Captain D’s in Pelham on the evening of 6/15/2022. I’m not sure who thought it was acceptable to serve food like this. At first, I couldn’t even see the fish because it was buried under a pile of crumbs—the photo was taken after I dug the filets out. Additionally, it seems like the filets are getting smaller and smaller. I remember when the portions used to be a decent size.
The worst meal I’ve ever had. The portions were incredibly small. I ordered two three-piece dinners, and each came with only about nine undercooked fries and a tiny scoop of mac and cheese. I even had to cook the fries myself in an air fryer. What you see in the pictures is for both orders combined. Keep in mind, each meal costs $8.69 plus tax. I strongly suggest choosing a different restaurant!
I won’t be coming back to this restaurant. The pre-packaged tartar sauce was served at room temperature, the fries were cold and hard, and both the hush puppies and fish tasted like they were fried in old oil. This has been the worst meal my wife and I have experienced since moving to Alabama. Take this as a warning: the food was awful, and we would have been better off just going to McDonald's – and I really don’t like McDonald's.
I had a wonderful experience at Captain D's! We visited this location on Friday, June 17th, around 5 PM, and everything was perfect. The cashier welcomed us with a smile, the dining area and restrooms were very clean, our orders were prepared correctly, and the food—fish, okra, and fries—was hot and fresh. We will definitely be coming back soon!
