Our first port of call on our river cruise was Passau, in Lower Bavaria, Germany. During our walking tour, we spotted the chocolatier from Cafe Simon setting out samples for a different tour group. Not wanting to miss out, we found Cafe Simon at the...conclusion of our walking tour and organ concert (also not to be missed). We were dazzled by the array of fantastic desserts, and purchased a bag of truffles, which cam... View all feedback.
What Magnus Kramer doesn't like about Cafe Simon:
We were thinking of doing lunch and also cakes/coffee there. Lunch was not value for money. Their chocolate specialty drinks were disappointing, full of milk with too little chocolate for the price they were charging for. The cakes were good though. View all feedback.
Passau was once an independent state between Bavaria, Austria, Bohemia. Not it is just an ancient city with rivers where lots of cruise ships start or finish their Danube cruises. But it has the trappings of royalty still with many coffee houses and bakeries. As a tourist I have not tasted them all, but on a tip went to Simon. It would be difficult to find a nicer selection of wonderful German/Austrian pasteries. with sit down tables inside and outside (warning smoking allowed outside so scout your neighbors before sitting down). I had poppyseed nutcake (MOHNNUSSKUCHEN) and tasted the raspberry chocolate cake (HIMBEERNKUCHEN). And I doubt I'd have them next visit, not because they were not delicious, but because there are 20 other choices to make! They have coffee, tea, chocolate drinks. They make home made ice cream that seemed very popular. Since I haven't been able to eat at all the rest of the Konditori in Passau, I can't guarantee this is the best, but I think it might be, and if you have just one shot, try Café Simon.
Need I say more? The sour cherry ice cream was the best I've ever had, and it was only 2 Euro! The shop also offers a variety of gingerbreads, chocolates and cakes. There are several items that are nicely packaged for you to take home as gifts. The only problem was that I couldn't read any of the labels or signs :/
Wonderful selection of treats and coffee. There is a few staff who speak English but you can also use the "point and bitte" method. Don't miss this for a mid morning or a mid afternoon snack!
We stopped here to pick up some gingerbread and decided to have coffee and dessert. My son is allergic to nuts and they were so very patient to help us find a dessert that he could eat. Since we don't speak German they were also wonderful taking the time to explain to us what each dessert was.
