Had their smoked fish chowder and the kumara fries. Service was a little slow but the view, ambiance, and delicious food made the wait delightful as well as worthwhile. View all feedback.
What Chelsea R doesn't like about 35 Degrees South:
We arrived and no one greeted us, so we took a seat ourselves. They have the world's SLOWEST service. There was one waiter and one barista on staff (the barista was doing pretty much everything while the waiter just stood around chatting with other tables). The food was just okay. This place has great atmosphere and great location right over the water. The staff are friendly and the service is good. The food is hit and miss. Some dishes eg scotch fillet are really good, others eg fish and chips are not so great I've had much better from the local fish and chip store. Prices for the mains aren't too bad, but they don't come with veges, so if you want something green you're best to order a side. I would go back again, but it wouldn't be my first choice
If I could give a Zero review I would, just AWFUL. When we arrived in the evening, there was a no one to greet us, and after a few minutes we were seated. Then we waited for a good 10 minutes until our waitress arrived. We asked for water and waited again, plus the water was refilled only occasionally. We were left alone for long periods of time. We ordered 3 meals and waited another 20 minutes for them to arrive. The service for a supposedly better class of restaurant was about equivalent to a pie truck on the street, it was just terrible. However, the REAL SURPRISE was the meals, the cost for which was considerably more than other restaurants in town which were quite crowded. (This was our final night vacation celebration meal and we had looked forward to a special dining experience. I ordered a salad, and I wish that I could post a picture. It was a main meal on the menu, however it was served on a small side-dish sized plate. The plate was only 2/3 covered, and barely higher than the 2 very large slices of toasted bread on the same plate. Even with the large bread slices it could not possibly make an acceptable meal quantity. I believe it was a Gouda cheese salad, and there was some cheese chunks if you looked for it. The second meal was a chicken dish with two very small pieces that barely covered just over 1/2 of a dinner plate. Worse than that, it was not very tasty, it was rubbery. The third dish that we ordered was fish and chips for our son, hard to mess that up right. Wrong! There were two pieces of poor quality smelly fish and about 20 chips, maybe. The restaurant had very few customers, and there was no soft background music or ambiance, the few diners there talked in a hushed silence. Such a huge disappointment after enjoying great meals at other restaurants in both Paihia and Russell. Based on our experience, AVOID THIS RESTAURANT.
Had the lamb tagjne and it was delicious!! The view of the pier from my table was amazing!! The service was great, super friendly!!

I would not come back here.
Took my partner here for our anniversary while on holiday and wasn't impressed. Her meal was sent back because it was uncooked, then it was re served cold. The quality and quantity of the food was so poor especially for the price.. Save your money and go to alfresco's a few hundred meters down the road.. least the food and service there is amazing !! :
